question on the 9210 classic doc

Roger,

I have the opportunity to p/u a 9211 from a fellow reefer and would like to know what the maximum size sps system it would perform well on. I know it is probably best for a FOWLR/softie system but I want to know if it's doable for a 54 gallon zeovit system with mostly sps.

I'll most likely buy it anyway but just wanted some of your input.

BTW, my 9410 kicks some serious booty!

The 9211 is a passive closed loop skimmer, it is plankton safe and removes waste by osmosis, this means it is slow to respond. It is ideal for corals which require a lot of feeding, it is a hold over from the days where people did best with soft corals and SPS really wasn't part of the hobby. Because of this they give it a maximum capacity of 79 gallons in an SPS tank and while I see it has been removed from the most recent publications, it used to say "Recommended for experts only" This is primarily because you have to really know your tank, this skimmer cannot quickly compensate and remove a dead anemone for example. On the other hand it is not so aggressive on trace elements and won't remove any living plankton.

Thanks Roger!

I've been looking for a becket style skimmer because I run zeovit, but all the beckets are too big for my sump except for the PM bullet 1 but it is an energy hog and loud. I figure the classic may work without precipitating the elements like the NW does.

BTW, it actually is a 9210 and not a 9211. Just found out-sorry.

Thanks again

I'll give it a go and see how it does then report back

I have heard that before but it makes no sense to me that needlewheels would precipitate trace elements. I am skeptical of that claim. A beckett would probably make just as small an air bubble and if it is function of air and water interaction or contact time, this would be independent of the way the bubbles are generated. I just don't see the scientific logic behind this argument.

I'm sure you're right. All the tanks running beckets with zeovit seem much more vibrant than most with NW's. Mine looks good but my colors are no where close to the becket users. The claim is that many elements (especially potassium) precipitate out much more than with a venturi skimmer. I'm not sure if it's related to the zeolites or not, but I do have to dose more mag (and now potassium) to keep levels consistent with zeovit.

Who knows, maybe it's the zeolite binding the K or a rouse by KZ to get people to buy their revolution skimmer$.

With that being said, I'm willing to see what the 9210 will do.

Thanks again Roger!
