Marc, I have only one culture disc of phyto so shoul I just start out with one 2 liter bottle, then split that once its ready? Also , is there a specific light I should use? Also I dont have micro alage grow, what can I substitute this with? Thanks

You can use half of the disk for each 2-liter bottle. And I use Miracle Grow instead, like Evan:

Cool, how much miracle gro should I use as food? Also, I have a strip fluroescent tube light that came with my 10g QT tank from walmart, will this be sufficient?

I use 5ml for each new 2L bottle of phyto. For example, when I have used 1 of my 2L bottles down to 1/3, I add 5ml of Miracle Grow and then fill the rest of the bottle with saltwater (my phyto specific gravity is at 1.019). When splitting, it is the same, I will take 1 2L bottle of cultured phyto and split it into three 2L bottles...add 5ml of MG to both and fill with saltwater. It typically takes 4 days for a bottle to get nice and green and I use a three foot shop light with 2 fluourescent bulbs from Home Depot. I typically am culturing 4-5 bottles at a time though, I easily could have used a two foot one. You can try the strip light, it may just take longer to culture without having a broad distribution of light over the bottle.

I have two strip lights so I can use both. So starting off I should use 2 2L bottles, split the culture(half into each) and give each bottle 5mL of miracle gro,correct? Then top off with 1.0119 SG saltwater.

Yes. 1.019 sg (you might have a typo there). I also add 1 ml of Kent's Essential Elements to each 2-liter bottle.

I just wanted to thank Marc for that info on his website about culturing phyto, I have been doing it for a few months now and it works great, now I just need to find somone locally to take some off my hands.

Marc and I just got back from Austin. We did a ton of great stuff including seeing makoJ's Tank of the Month from March 2008 which made my jaw drop permanently. I'm sorry I haven't been around for the last month, new job has been insane and awesome at the same time.

Regardless it's time to catch up and get some long overdue things taken care of

I have tons of new updates for everyone which will trickle in starting tomorrow as I make constant updates from here forward a promise. Secondly we did get some recording done in Austin so... We got to see some fantastic fish stores there and Marc spoke at a local club event the makoJ hosted.

BMWAaron was amazing as always and let Marc and me stay at his house and play with his cute kid. We also each came home with some great goodies to show you.

I'm floating/acclimating bags as we speak and am so tired ATM I can't keep my eyes open but I will see you guys tomorrow without a doubt back on this thread. PBITAWA
