Quoyi parrotfish reef safe?

I know I never dreamed about owning a parrotfish until I saw my quoyi at the LFS. First thing I thought of when I heard the term parrotfish:

Man, that just ain't right. LOL!!!

The guy I'm going to get mine from has been getting them for quite sometime and he hasn't ever seen one over 8"

Well mine is larger than that. Truth be told, it's the biggest fish I've ever purchased.

So far mine has been reef safe with no nips at the reef or clean-up crew. Nips at the rock but but that's about it. They are very reminiscent of wrasses. The parrot gives a little grief to my linneatus if it gets to close but that's all the aggression it shows and only to that fish.

Absolutely beautiful fish that looks both right at home and super scary in a reef tank. It's like seeing an adult emperor angel in a reef tank. You cringe at first them just admire how right it looks. Love it!

If you can get a smaller fish I think a 6' tank would support it with no problems. Especially with their reported super slow growth rate in home systems.

I like the sound of that. My rock scape is going to be a couple big pillar islands with overhangs so there will be tons of swimming space. Still something I may not do but I love this thread.

as I recall

as I recall

there was a fellow in the UK with a 500+ gallon SPS aquarium housing one of these Parrotfish.

And Pieter van Suijlekom's (redone) Reef Aquarium has one seen here in the video taken by Tanu
I just drove by today and shot a small video using my iPhone, so my apologies for the lacking quality. The tank still has to mature, but is developing very nicely. When watching the video, keep in mind that this tank was completely restarted about 6 months ago. The large (more than 300) group of Apogon parvulus is really impressive.

See for yourself :) (be sure to watch in HD ;))

Haha not your tank your Quoyi!

Oh  About 9" including the tail. Thick as my wrist! A few more pics... sorry, the camera flash makes him look a bit radioactive :o The lighting is pretty low on my FOWLR, so pics with a point and shoot with no flash just don't come out... I need to work on that.

Do parrotfish shed scales? I often find large scales, which I can only assume are from the quoyi, stuck to the powerhead. Maybe it's no more than any other fish, but in this case they are large enough to see? I never see him flash or scratch against anything.

i can't tell you if they shed scales.

it might be aggression from another fish... occasionally i would witness my flame hawk driving himself into my mystery wrasse causing some of his scales to come off.

your specimen is awesome!

There's not allot of information out there about these fish. Anybody know the differences between the quoyi and princess parrotfish?

Other than that they are different species, no. This quoyi is the only parrot I've ever owned, though interestingly it was sold to me by the LFS as a princess parrot.
