Quoyi parrotfish reef safe?

OK, looking on my computer now, definitely not a quoyi. Beautiful fish nonetheless!

What kind of parrot does it look like to you SD? Princess maybe? I can't tell whether or not it is from the picture and I can't tell if there is a yellow band on the side like princess parrots have

Based on the turquoise areas on the snout and face, and the totally clear pectoral fins, I'd say yes, likely a princess. And a very pretty one at that!

Kind of hard to tell with the conflicting pictures I'm finding from images on the web. You all may be right. The most consistent hint I'm getting are the stripes on the mouth and around the eyes. From what I can see the princess has the stripes, and the quoyi has more of a dot/dash pattern around the eyes.

Still a little hard to get a good pic. She's still shy in the QT and has on her camoflauge somewhat trying to hide. Don't know why she picked the air stone instead of the couple of pieces of LR I put in the tank.

Thoughts? Princess or quoyi???

Well congrats either way on your purchase! They are very similar in dietary needs and requirements

Yeah. I think I'm going to hold onto her either way. I've got a very understocked 225 for her after QT. Once she settles in a little, and starts eating, I'm thinking a good prazi treatment for anything internal correct? They don't really need or do copper well from what I've read...

Mine did cupramine just fine.

Good to know. I'll probably add that to my order as well. Cupramine is definetely good to have around the house...

I must admit that I'm a little worried about the adult size of the princess. How big do they really get in a home system?

Also: I've read that you all have had success with getting these fish to eat anything. What's the most successful food to get them started in a QT system that has them timid to move (yet alone eat)?

My parrot was first interested in clam on the half shell, he'd rip them apart but wouldn't really eat the large pieces. Once I got him into that frenzy he'd also get pretty excited about mysis and pellets. He learned to eat nori from my tangs.

Mine was also interested in small meaty foods first. Small is important, they don't seem to like, or to be able to swallow, large pieces. Eventually pellets are best, IMO.

Great advice guys!!! Thanks. I have krill, mysis, and spirulina brine shrimp on hand. I'll hop on the golf cart and head to the supermarket to grab some live clam. I'm also going to throw a couple of hermits in there to clean up what she doesn't eat and remove them once she starts eating and before I start her treatments. I have 35g of fresh saltwater mixed to keep up the water changes and keep the ammonia at a low level.
I'm probably not going to start the treatment until she takes to pellets.

Can anyone think of anything I'm forgetting?

Oh yeah. I also read that a princess shouldn't get any larger than 8-9 inches in a home aquarium. I can handle that...

Thanks Man. She did accept the cockle after thoroughly examining it for a couple of hours. Even better, she is already going after pellets. Still extremely shy, she only eats when I am not in the room. Good to know that she is eating still the same...

That's great! Yeah my Quoyi is also shy. I guess it's the nature of parrot fish..

Mine was shy for about 3 days and now comes up to the nori clip and looks at it and looks at me like "hey you going to feed me?"

Looks to be about the same for mine. She is MUCH more interactive with me now. My QT is in my office, and when I come into the office, she comes right out looking at the food container I have sitting next to her tank. She sits there until I turn off the ciruclation to feed her. Then she just paces back and forth until I pick it up and feed her. I'll try to get some better pictures later. She is REALLY coloring up beautifully as she gets used to the tank, and comfortable.

Curiously, I added 3 hermits to help clean up after her, and they were all out of their shells this morning and dead. Not eaten... Just dead... I'm not sure if she has a hatred for hermits or not, but I'll try one more to see how it goes. That'll be good information to know before she enters my DT after observation and treatment.

I'll try Nori Wednesday. She goes crazy for pellets, so she should be good until then. I also just did a small water change, and will do another 5 gallon change Wednesday night. That way, if she makes a mess of the nori, I can siphon it out before my water change.

Since she's eating so well, I may start my treatments this Friday...

Mine wouldn't eat nori until he was put in the DT and watched my tangs and angels eating the nori. Mine favors the pellets over all. She could of been playing with the hermits and killed them?? Mine didnt like my hybrid cleaner goby and took a bit out of his stomach and killed him, but he loves my two yellow cleaner gobys I have. It was a isolated incident for me but none the less happened

I'm going to have to second this. I've seen mine snap at my yellow tangs, and since I've had him 3 cleaner shrimp and 2 harlequins have disappeared. I'd like to blame this on my coral banded shrimp as I didn't witness anything happen - but I should mention it all the same. I knew it was a possibility when I got the fish, and though disappointing, I still think he's worth it.

I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this. Hopefully its just rough playing instead of aggression. Either way it seems to be hazardous to the invertebrates. I may throw a peppermint shrimp in the QT before treatment starts to see how it fares. I have about $120 worth of shrimp in my DT and I'd like to know if I should remove them before adding this parrotfish.
