Quoyi parrotfish reef safe?

Thanks for the tips. Can't wait to see him in the DT. Only experience with prazipro was with my copperband butterfly and he is still on a hunger strike. Will get him eating first and slowly ramp up prazi. This one is about 4.5 inches, so I hope to have him for a very long time.

I haven't had fish go on hunger strikes because of PP but I have heard others say the same as you. 4.5" is a great size. My Quoyi is my favorite fish I currently own and can't imagine a tank without one

normal to be sitting on bottom of tank?

normal to be sitting on bottom of tank?

OK. So I just got this fish yesterday so he is still settling in QT. It does not seemed stressed out but does not swim around. He just sits on the bottom of the tank with his eyes darting around watching me when I am next to the tank. Is this normal behavior or something I should be concerned about? I have read they are shy to begin with. Hopefully that is all this is.

I wouldn't worry about it. The behavior will change when the fish becomes comfortable. When they do get scared and go into camo/flashing they literally just hunker down to where I can grab mine with my hand if I wanted to

Anybody on here snag the big beautiful Scarus rivulatus on DD tonight?

I really wish I had been in a position to. Shame on DD for mislabeling it!

I saw that too, beautiful fish would love to figure out how to get one of these and my Quoyi in a tank together. I wonder how these are ordered. If it just says Scarus parrot sp or if the whole saler is the one who mislabeled it in the first place. Someone at LA should of caught that though. That's the bigger parrot I have seen sold on DD, it was 8 or 8.5" I think it was

I'd imagine it came in labeled as a Quoyi (as so many Quoyi's have come in as Princesses) and nobody thought to look twice. I said something on their Facebook sneak peek of this one and they didn't acknowledge it, oh well. Hope the buyer knows what he got!

The buyer knows what he or she got alright... A Quoyi parrotfish!!:lolspin:

Just wanted to chime in and explain the mistake was corrected, and we contacted the customer prior to shipping this beautiful fish. Its important to me also the buyer understands this fish is actually a Surf Parrotfish- Scarus rivulatus, and grows to 40cm TL so they can properly house the animal when fully grown. Sorry for the problems.

Wouldn't expect anything less from you or your company! Do you plan on getting anymore of these beauty's or Scarus other than Quoyis? Another question I can't seem to find the answer to is are the Quoyi females? We only ever see males on DD

+1 Thanks for addressing that! I would personally love to see this species available more, same max size and basic care as the Quoyi.

Kevin, do you have thoughts on keeping multiple parrots from the Scarus genus (possibly more than one Quoyi) in large home aquariums, say 500+ gallons? Have you guys had experience with keeping them together at your facility during the quarantine process?

I always try and source different Scarus but they can be problematic shippers from certain export locales. The most common Pacific species exported is the juvenile Cetoscarus ocellatus, followed by S. quoyi, then infrequently Chlorurus bowersi, Chlorurus bleekeri, and Scarus chameleon. I personally think the biggest issue is that most export stations overseas have a difficult time positively identifying these fishes, and just offer them up as "Colored Parrotfish" which complicates matter further.

As far as female Quoyi, I have received a few small ones (3" specimens) which appeared to be females, but its very uncommon see them offered at this smaller size.

From my personal experience, combined with a close friends who has a very large home aquariums (1000 gallons) and tried to maintain a larger male and a few very small Scarus quoyi together, it didn't work out well. After adding the small group within days, the male was relentless and would try and kill the two smaller fish of the group. I dont think mixing different species of larger Parrotfishes works well either, even in very large home aquariums of 500 gallons or more.

Thank you very much for sharing this experience - we've had a few people ask on this thread and haven't had anyone with insight to offer. Best to stick with one

What's everyone's experience with growth rates? Mine hasn't done much of anything.... the only reason I notice is because he slowly is no longer one of the biggest fish in the tank.

I feel like mine grew a fair amount (+1.5" in a year) and bulked up a bit, but has since slowed down at about 8 inches. I might just not be noticing because my other fish are growing steadily too...

Thank you Kevin for the explanations and information on what you see and identification or lack there of. If one wanted to get pairs of specific fish from you, how would I go about doing that?

Maybe a inch or a little more? I don't notice my fish getting bigger, but others who have seen him from last May until now say he is larger
