Quoyi parrotfish reef safe?

I hate to break it to you guys but it seems like the prices in the US etc is rather steep for marine fishes.

Here in Singapore, Quoyi parrotfishes are available at the ubiquitous farms/LFS island-wide. I can get a 6-8" for a mere $SGD15 which is about $USD12.
I got my 30cm emperor angelfish for SGD$40 (I was able to select from the 13 emperors available in a store at the time i went there). The quality of the fishes are also rather good. The emperor itself was an aggressive eater while it was in the Qt. It loved the New era pellets (I had to lump them up to create larger Pellet balls). The Quoyi parrot that i acquired didn't actually swim much in the QT but now that its in my fowlr DT, its much better. It's shredding my large live rocks though :(

Yes we know this. Funny when you start throwing in 300$ box charges for reOx on a two day trip suddenly makes the 40$ fish you were buying a little more pricey. I'm sure that queen angels from the carribean are 40$ for you like they are here. Also the price of Quoyis are around the 100$ mark, if your looking on DD at one then that's your mistake... They have doubled in price on DD in the past year

Where is a good place to look for a Qouyi these days? I've watched the price climb on DD and now that my tank is ready , I want one. But not for $300:(

Need to find a vendor that deals with Australia/ Java shipments and go from there. They are often mislabeled and sold incorrectly. QM would be the best place to start. The guy I got mine from no longer sells fish but I paid 90$ for mine. I would ask Michael at NYAquatics to look into getting one for you if you don't want to spend 300$ on one from DD. LA only sells them on DD along with many other fish

Thank you Dmorty. I've dealt with Michael in the past so I'll give him a call.

I email with him on a weekly basis and he always lets me know what's coming in and if I ask him for something he doesn't have he keeps a eye out for me and let's me know when he has found it. Plus he has a store wide 10%off right now... That means you can get the Mitratus he has for 270$ which is a stellar deal for that fish

Lol, I was looking at that. But the wife will kill me if I make any big purchase right. Before the holiday and mess up her plans. Whatever they may be

Well, I have an update. I'm considering getting rid of my princess parrotfish. I love everything about the fish, and it is completely reef safe, but it is a frag making machine!!!

This fish uses every inch of the 225g tank, and is in constant movement, but close to night time, it will be swimming across the tank, and notice it's reflection. It will then dart across the tank to attack it's reflection while knocking over or breaking every sps in it's way. You can literally hear it hit the glass sometimes. I end up with several frags and broken colonies as a result. I will mount some of the frags that I can get to, but sometimes, they end up in the middle of a lower sitting coral, and either killing that coral, or dying itself.

Has anybody ever successfully trapped one of these fish, or had any luck catching one? Many of my coral have grown across to other rocks, and I have more than 300 pounds of LR in my tank, so breaking it down isn't really a viable option...

Thanks!!!

Picked this guy up today from my LFS. He came in with an Atlantic shipment and was being sold as a queen parrotfish. They had him under pretty heavy actinic lighting, and it wasn't until I got him home that that I noticed a lot of characteristics of S. quoyi, so I wanted to try to get a positive ID. (I'm happy with this fish either way, and have plenty of space in my system for either species).

That's a Quoyi for sure, they are often mislabeled as queens. Probably got him for a good price too being labeled a queen. Congrats, one of my favorite fish

Thanks! Yeah, was quite reasonable price wise (about a third of what you would pay for S. quoyi at a major online retailer's WYSIWYG). The LFS had 3 available, all between 7 and 10". I actually chose the least colorful of the 3 because it shared a tank with a princess parrot that was about half it's size (which will be the case in my system as well) with no apparent aggression. Was a tough decision between the one that I picked up, and one that was on another level in terms of color.

He should color up, he looked great in the picture. The smallest I have ever seen one available for was 5". The Quoyi will be happy in the pool!

Anyone tried more than one Quoyi in a large tank? This was discussed a little somewhere in this thread but no one had done it if i remember correctly

I would imagine that has to do with something lacking in the natural diet much like orange tail emperors lose the orange. Could be totally wrong too

AFAIK they eat algae... I feed the most high in spirulina content pellet food that I can find, and there is plenty on the rocks. I'd be really surprised if it's a food issue. I'm thinking sexual issues, like with anthias and fairy wrasses.

Yeah from that picture I would agree. Wow
