Radion G4 first impressions.

Sweet Rodney! I installed the second xr30 G4 yesterday. Everything is lit from corner to corner. I’m runnng @ 60% ab+ and just lowered to 40% for a couple weeks so I don’t shock my coral from adding the second Radion. The ab+ is such an awesome preset. My coral react so well with it.

Finally my PAR meter arrived today....Apogee MQ510, so had to check my levels. Running four Radion G4 Pro on a 7' tank and have to say coverage is pretty good - a fifth would give solid even coverage.

My lights are at 12" above the water and running AB+, at 70% PAR was in the sweet spot of 280-400 across most of the tank.

Wow, Rod! You joint Radions as well..nice... How would you compare them to Mitras? I have 7' tank as well but deep, 72x36x24 and in my calculation i would need 6 XR40 and 2 Xr15 for good SPS coverage...

mike

PS, I am still with T5s in my DR tank and trying Radions on my frag tank with AB+ :)

Yep Mike, Radions now almost a year with the G4 Pro's. Of all the LEds these are my favourites, the brightness is fantastic on the G4 Pros, spread is better on these than my old Mitras and the color is amazing. Ive not used the new Mitras so cant really comment, I did see them some time ago and looked ok but I just prefer the light output of the Radion.

Ive only had corals back in my tank a few months now (dont ask too many issues to list) but here are some pics

So who out there has set their own colours? It seems the AB plus is the most common setting ppl are using but I am not happy with the colour. What setting is closer to a 20K look, is there one?

Hi Mike, sorry to interrupt setting conversation. How do you like the spread and coverage with the XR30 radions in the AL fixture mounted parallel? I talked to them at RAP about an option to mount perpendicular. I have a similar sized tank as yours but running 3 G3 pro XR30 perpendicular w RB XHO actinic. I like AB+ but find what works for you, 20 is just bluer.

Been running mine (three XR30 Gen4 Pro and one XR15) for about 9 months now and been very happy with them. I do not run them as my sole form of lighting (also use Kessils), but they have performed well. SPS growth has been very good and color is good.

Mike,

I use sps ab+ but upped the whites to 50% get the color I wanted (and dropped red to 0). I prefer to see the true pinks and purples of the coralline. The yellows look better to me too. I do keep the standard settings during the ramp up and down though.

Hi, I still need to figure out and do a custom light schedule. I like a more natural look as well with the blue on the high side. I find the colours right now looking artificial.

Hi Joe,

There's really no concern now regarding shadowing even with the parallel orientation given that I have the T5s as supplement. i know that SPS will get sufficient lighting. When the Radions are on, only when I am home, there is enough coverage for my viewing pleasure. T5s only come on during the day when I am at work.

This was grown under Radion G1! I can't even imagine what you can achieve with the G4s [emoji12]

Hi, I still need to figure out and do a custom light schedule.

Assume you are programming through ecosmart live. If so, select the standard sps AB+ program (in the radion tab, select "load from template" in the schedule options drop down menu). It will allow you to pick start and stop times. Once programed, just click on a point in the daily schedule view. When you do this the color sliders will pop up on the right side with current settings. You can then move the sliders to whatever you want. As you do this the light will change over the tank so you can preview it (unless you are in offline mode). Once set they way you want make sure you click "save" under the sliders before going to the next point. When done you can send to the lights.

Thank you. I'm lovin' my 20K setting!

So how many of the G4 pros would I need for a 250 DD? The foot print is 5' L x 3'W x 2' D with a center brace. So I have a 30" x 36" square on each side to cover. I was thinking 2??

Mike, I don’t have any corals close to the front glass.... so the coverage area is probably a lot less. Looking at the specs they show a 36” x 36” footprint of coverage, is this a lie?

Yup, of course it depends on what kind of coral you have etc. no way one radion covers 36*36

I understand the new optics really help spread the light. I did find
That there was still a bit of shadowing however. So the more the merrier.

if i get 90 gallon (48”) how many radions do i need? it will be mostly lps/softie tank. would 3 rx15 be ok or 2 rx30?

That's what I was reading as well but if I were to elevate them 16" or so I think the shadowing would be barely noticeable. I have an enclosed canopy that is 20" high. I will give it a shot and see what happens. I'll keep you posted.
