Random flow questions on closed loop

Hi,
I need some help. As I understand it I need random flow as well as constant flow through the tank. I have a 40 gallon breeder. I have a Quiet One 3,000 for the return. I have a Quiet One 5,000 for my closed loop. What should I use to produce the randon flow? An OM Squirt? Or a SCWD? I hear people are having problems with the SCWD. Is it because they are not cleaned regulary or because they are poorly made? I've also seen people just use constant flow through their tank via loc-line placed through out the tank. What would you all suggest? Just need some help. I will be drilling my tank and adding loc line's with 3in flare nozzles. I was going to include 2 in the front of the tank and 2 in the back. Inhabitants I want to keep are
clams, orange caps, purple caps, frogspawn, hammer corals, zoos, blastos, favia, white pom pom pumping xenia, plate coral, and some others as well. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you. =)

I really don't think you have to go through the trouble / extra cost of random flow. I have a couple of tanks. One nano and a 125, neither have random flow, but both have high flow and strategically placed returns/powerheads.

marine girl any pics of your plumbing? Im in the planning phases of a 40 gallon breeder myself with a 20L sump and a closed loop. Planning on drilling the back and using spaflex or some other type of flexible braidedreinforced hose instead of 90 degree pvc so i can avoid the loss of flow. but any pics of your plumbi ng would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!

Hi,
I haven't got my plumbing done yet. =( Sorry. That is why I am trying to figure it out now to get the flow correct. Are you going with just a sump or a refugium in the sump? I am planning on incorporating the refugium in the sump to grow mangroves or macroalgae to reduce nitrates and produce a nice colony of pods. I wanted to also get rid of the 90* pvc, but I was told I wouldn't loose flow? Don't know about that one. Once I get everything plumbed I will post. I am still trying to figure out the best design. I want everything black because I want the corals colors to pop out and I want to hide the look of the loc line. What do you plan on doing? I was thinking about going with the 20gallon aga, but it wasn't big enough to build a refugium as well. =( What are your plans for your 40? What pumps are you going to use? Are you going to use loc line as well? Tell me your plan and the fish you'd like to keep. =) My potential fish are Royal Gramma, False Percula's, Hi Fin Red Banded Goby, Red Velvet Wrasse(when I save enough money) and the main attraction a Green Mandarin. I know I need 75 pounds of live rock, mature the tank a year, and grow pods in the fuge. =) Possibly also a seperate container for pod reproduction. Just don't want anyone getting upset with me for keeping this little guy. I will also hatch some live brine shrimp for him. Also, I'd love a variety of corals. As you can see my list above. You have 15 years freshwater experience? I have about 8 years. I did the planted tank and wanted to go the discus route, but instead I decided to go the marine route. =) I have a 150gallon freshwater right now with a lot of different plants and a variety of fish. Okay my post is too long. Sorry. I love fish. =)

Here is my list so far. Sorry I should have posted this with the other previous post. I just get so excited I can't wait to get everything started. My overflow is going to be 1in bulkhead, return line will be 3/4". The closed loop will be 3/4" as well. Here are the supplies I have so far, 100 pounds of live sand (doubt I'll need that much) I am going for a DSB, 40 gallon aga (wish I would have went with starfire glass after hearing about it =/ ) Remora Pro Skimmer, Visitherm heater, Refractometer, Aqualight Pro, Custom Stand which was a pain in the butt and I had to take down the first time around because my stain turned orange >=/ American DJ Power Switch, 3,000 quiet one pump for the sump return, and a Quiet One 5000 for the closed loop. I am going to have to make a custom sump/refugium. Hmmm....there might be more I am missing but I can't recall right now. I also have a 10 gallon Quarantine I will set up. I'd love to hear your plans. Hope everyone is having a good day.
