what about reef crystals? have u tried that? how does that compare to IO. sorry for taking away from your thread. nice tank by the way. lol

Reef Crystals is the same high quality constant salt as IO except with a little more calcium and magnesium. They also put a little something in there to detoxify metals. RC is made by the same company as IO.

cowfish

cowfish

hello randy! i also have a longhorned cowfish. he's my absolute favorite fish and also everyone else's too! what a personality!

i want to put him in my 65 gal reef tank, but my husband says if he dies he will pollute and kill the whole tank.. i know this fact, but is it really true? what will you do if that happens?

just curious. i am dying to put him in my big show tank instead of the 20 gal minireef.(yes i know he will get huge, i will upgrade tanks as i need to-he's just a baby now.)

Yes, my cowfish is getting quite large, but is still a great addition to my 120. There are actually very few folks that report the massive toxic release events that are often associated with cowfish. I couldn't find any for this species in searching a while ago, although many people lost them for various reasons.

i want to see your sump! i am very interested what equipment is under the tank

There's not too much under the tank, but a whole section of the basement is refugia, etc. The contractors working on our kitchen are afraid to go in there. :D

Coralife Ozone Reactor

Coralife Ozone Reactor

agreed with Randy on this Coralife Ozone Reactor.

Don't buy it. It is horrible.

i am going to do some research on the toxic events associated with long horned cowfish and see if i come up with anything too. if i dont, i think i am going to put my fish in my main tank. everyone who comes over to my house loves the cowfish the best and i sing when i feed him, so the minute i open the top and start singing, he comes right up for food..

my husband was wondering if the toxin would kill just fish or the corals too. i thought it was probably both.. i will let you know if i find anything!

My two older refugia have about 6" of fine aragonite on the bottom. They are about 3-4 sq ft each. The other two are bare/rubble bottom. Each of those two are also about 3-4 sq feet.

There is also live rock in them, as well as in one of the parts of my sump (some is lit, some is dark). The live rock is just left over for various reasons.

How long has the refugia with the sand been in there?

Have you left it undisturbed?

Do you have rooting plants tunneling their roots below it?

Does algae cover the sand, that would aid in organic matter for denitrification?

The refugia with sand have been there more than 5 years. I don't mess with the sand, but on occasion I've looked at it, even down into it, and don't see any black areas.

Most does not have any rooting plants. It is largely shaded by macro above, and has little to no algae on it.

Do you think if you removed that sand, you would still keep those pristine numbers(< .03ppm P, undetectable nitrate) with just the macro algae?

I think my sand does nothing at the moment. The macroalgae takes out 95+% of the nutrients, IMO. It had lots of bubbles that were released from it before I really expanded the macroalgae, but no has none, even if I poke around in it.

You need to it sounds cool. Alot of us would like to see it. I like the idea of running both your tanks in line. some day when i have the time and money i'll do the same thing. This sport cost to much money just ask my wife she'll tell you.
