rare clowns....

Hey guys,

I just purchased Fautin and Allen's book and as I was looking trough it a few things caught my eye...

One being a stripeless version of the Melanopus from the coral sea..outside of this book I do not reacall ever seeing or hearing of these guys...

Also on several pages in the book it shows a large bed of bubble tips hosted byy numerous melanopus. However if you look closely I see several what look like eppiphium, do they look like that to you or do they look like stripeless melanopus? In either case I would imagine they are cross breeding, so has anyone ever seen any clowns that look like hybrids of these guys?

Finally has anyone ever seen or own the Clarkii color scheme from the Christmas Islands? They are really cool loking and I would love to get my hands on a pair if possible...

Thanx

christmas island clarkii's? can you post a pic? clarkii's are like the mutts of the clownfish world, their colors and patterns vary the most IMO. here is one I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

Wow sweet clown, it kind of looks like a tomato cross. I will try and find a pic but basically it is all black and white, no yellow at all. FWIW it's on page 50 of the Fautin and Allen book.

it's all clarkii, but I have never seen another one like it. the stripe is broken on both sides I am hoping that it is an inheritable trait that i can breed.

I know which ones you are talking about now. my lfs gets some like that in from time to time.cant say that I care much for them. I like my clowns to be bright

Ok cool, thanx stythkyn. It looks to me like your clarkii there is from New Guinea, does that sound right to you?

Also, any info on the stripeless melanopus from the coral sea?

Thanx

I havent seen any of the stripeless, then again I may have seen some that were labled as ephippium.most wholesalers arent too concerned where the fish come from. most of the clowns that I have seen labled as coral sea were cinammon. ask your local dealers if they have anything on their order lists that match what you want. many times if I give my stores an idea of what I am looking for they will keep an eye out for me and hold specimens when they come in so I can examine them. it's kind of hit and miss, especially with large families such as the clarkiis and tomato's there are so many different variations.

Wow. That's interesting. To look at it my first guess would not have been clarkii. It looks like a possible hybrid. Those stripes may completely disappear with age too. Whatever it is, it's a cool looking clown.

Those are stripeless melanopus. It is most likely and inherited mutation. I doubt they would be cross breeding with ephippium. A. ephippium's range does not extend anywhere near the Coral Sea.
