Rarities underwater

Also posted on another thread, but this is a rarity for now. Five sightings of Lion fish on Curacao [separate sites]. With no natural predators this is just the start. Note the very full belly. Photo taken yesterday.

I went to Cuba last Febuary. Went on 4 dives and went snorkeling many times. I saw over 50 lionfish! It was cool to see but they do not belong there and there was way too many!

Did you kill it?

To busy taking pictures !! Went back with a friend and the Lion fish knew we were after it and stayed under the brain coral. I have just ordered some hand nets because if you approach them slowly, they are easier to catch as opposed to trying to spear them. Besides taking a spear, even a small one on the reef can get you in big trouble. Also killing the larger Lions, I am told may lead to them releasing any eggs.
I am not sure if the local aquarium has decided to start an exhibit for education purposes. The fish are so new that I don't think the island has decided how to handle the invasion. I was thinking of setting up a tank at the dive shop so people could see them.

We have no large groupers or sharks on this side of the island so the medium and large Lion fish have no predators, and they multiply like rabbits. They also seem to eat non stop.

Here in Puerto Rico are lots of thems and are collectin thems for the home aquariums and sold for a very high price because they are illegal. Sorry for my English.

Hey all! Thanks again for all the votes!! :) I am glad to provide interesting content to the site. This week I am really busy with finals at UT, but I will post some more photos when I have time (hopefully soon). I am running out of rare fish photos, but will continue to post nice ones.

As for collecting, I usually do have permits, but they are for dead fish. I don't think it would be too much trouble to get permits to bring live fish, but just the hassle of dealing with packing and transporting them scares me a lot!

Was that you I saw on the science channel last night? Talking about the nurse sharks of bikini atoll?

Yep, that was me :) The first time it aired was back in December of last year, I had no idea they were still showing it.

Will look for more pigmy angel shots.
