few more...

few more...

ok, what about:

yellow tang
hawaiian black trigger
potters angel
burgess' butterfly

thanks again!

don't know rest of them.

but

Clown tang - bellicose
Sohal tang - notorious
Flame angel - aggressive toward memebers of its own genus
Powder blue tang - so does he or she

you'd better introduce it to your tank very carefully with concern or they had better be the last fish. in your tank

I'd say Purple and Yellow Tangs are about the same, and I'd give them a 3. Not "mean" but not a pushover, either.

Yes, I would agree with Amanda. With fish that are not interesting to them, they are indifferent BUT with fish they care about they can be mean.

the good thing is it's easier to get smaller clown tangs than smaller sohals

That only means that you have a little more time before they start killing things, so it's really not all that helpful.

Also, very small clown tangs can starve very easily.

Each of the above ratings can be raised up a notch or two depending on tank size and tank mates.

I agree with Brian, plus always remember that each fish is an individual.
I have had Big maroon Clowns that were big babies, and not aggressive in the least. And I have had Blennies that were just mean.

I think that by taking a fish out of the sea and sticking it in a big glass box, we are automatically increasing their aggression levels. In the big ocean they have plenty of room, in a small tank they "need" to care about space, so they are more aggressive.

Well, my fairy wrasse is way too aggressive towards my firefish. However a clown tang would be very passive towards a mandarin.

The numbers doesnt really mean a lot, its about the combination. If you are going to add just a single tang and the rest will consist of small fish, it doesnt matter if your tang is 3 or 5 because tangs are territorial towards other tangs, butterflies, etc, not small fish.
However the aggression between 3 bangaii cardinals will be fatal (certain death of one).

Thus if you have combinations in your mind, just write them here and we can tell if there will be any aggression between fish.

Good point. Mine were based on the assumption of an appropriately sized tank.

I agree, except I would probably bump the Potters and Flame to a 3 and the Tusk down to 2-3..Of course a lot depends on tank size as Brian stated.;)

...and lack of appropriate type and quantity of food. Fish get aggressive if they see their tankmates as competition for food. A lot of people underfeed in a reef to keep the water paramters low and end up with aggressive fish.

maybe thats why my fish seem to get along fine and i have a large population of bristle worms(as a clean up crew)... i feed heavy and do plenty of water changes
