Recommend a good/cheap place for SLR lenses

Well, since christmas came and I did not get the lenses I had asked for, I figured I might as well get them myself. However, I really don't know of any reputable and yet cheap places to get them. I did a quick search and seems a lot of these places seem a little shady or charge you and arm and a leg for the S/H. Rather than chance it after spending a few hours looking aorund on the net, let me ask the obvious question:

Can you provide me with some good places and yet very cheap ones to get some Canon and Tamron lenses????

Thanks.

i've had success with ebay but be very cautious. read the description really good and check their feedback. b&h had a great catalog. I don't kno if they still ship them.

Any particular vendors or just used stuff? This is one thing I would rather buy new. One tiny scratch and they later claim it wasn't there before shipping. Too much to deal just to save $20-40. Plus, there are some retarded shipping charges there all over.

You have to be especially careful because there is a lot of grey market gear out there. The price seems really good until you try to get warranty service on it and you find out that it has none. There's a Canon rebate program on for the next few weeks still but you have to buy from an authorized dealer.

What lenses are you looking for?

Canon F 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Autofocus Lens $360
Kenko 2x MC7 DG AF Teleplus Autofocus Teleconverter for Canon EOS $135
Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens $70

That is what I ahve in the shopping basket of B&H right now. The last one must be an error, but I'll put it in and see what hapens

By the way, is the Canon F 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Autofocus Lens much better than the one above? I figured they were about the same price, so I would get a little more zoom with the 28-200. Same quality?

Actually neither of those get very good reviews. Of the two, the 28-135 has the edge.

One you might want to look at is: Canon EF 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 II USM

I've never owned one but it's got good reviews and it's bargain priced. If you'd like to move up a notch the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is an excellent lens but you will pay for the "L" in the name.

The 50mm 1.8 isn't a typo. It's a consumer grade lens so it won't take a pounding but it's a nice addition to your bag.

What camera body are you using?

I am using a canon rebel XT. Thanks for the heads up on the lenses and the recommendation. I will look into the ones you mentioned.

Dude, I almost had a heart attack. The second one above is $1000+ vs the other which is $230. I guess you can guess you can tell which I am leaning to:lol:

This is one hobby in which you truly get what you pay for. It's also a lot like reef keeping in that it's cheaper to buy the good stuff the first time rather than buying the cheap stuff and then replacing it with the good stuff.

The 28-105 will do you for a while.....you'll see. :D

Depending on what you like to shoot you might want to get something wider than 28. Your XT is a 1.6x "crop body." What that means is that a 28mm on your camera gives the magnification of almost a 50mm. The works like an 80mm.

If you decide that you need something wider, down the road, the Tokina 12-24 is a great choice and it's not too expensive.

Also, you likely won't care for the 2x tele-convertor. The problem with them is that they also reduce the light entering the camera by 2 full stops. Autofocus stops working around f6. If your goal is tank shots, pickup a set of Kenko extension tubes instead. They'll serve you better.

Cheers

Try www.BeachCamera.com They have pretty competetive pricing and I usually order my camera equipment from them. Never had a problem so far. Also like someone mentioned, Ebay is a great place to find used lens's, as long as you know what you want, and deal with some of the better sellers.

B&H has the best prices for new gear. I'm a big fan of the Sigma EX line of lenses. Their quality varies, but if you find a good copy they're on par with "L" quality.

I'd suggest the following set of Canon lenses.

EF 17-40 F4 L
EF 70-200 F4 L
EF 50 F1.8
EF 100 F2.8 macro

I have all but the first one in my camera bag already. Just added a 1.4x teleconverter today, and I hope to pick up the 17-40 in the next few months.

I love how everyone throws L's at someone when they said they are leaning towards not spending alot.

What you have selected should do you just fine jumping into it and learning. You can always slowly upgrade to better glass down the road.
I use Sigma4less.com and they are good..very good prices and fast shipping.
I use Sigma EX lens and sold off my L as I feel its more bang for the buck

The way I look at it, it's cheaper to buy quality than to buy twice. The two "L"s that I recommended are by far the cheapest available, at ~$510 and ~$590 (after rebates). Compared to the $360 lens that was already under consideration, that's not a huge jump for me for the additional quality. Compared to most L lenses which are $1k+, these are practically bargain priced.

Furthermore, L lenses hold their value pretty well, so it someone ever decides to move on, it's easy to get most of your money back out of them.
