23mg of milbemycin oxime treats 380-400 gallons. Milbemycin oxime is the active ingredient in the pill. The large breed pill weighs about 1 gram and has 23mg of milbemycin in it. The dosage used in the treatment is based on the entire interceptor pill, not the active ingredient. Meaning you use 25mg of interceptor per 10 gallons of water.

We got it./no we don't. Sorry! This is what is confusing.

So you are saying to use 25mg of Interceptor per 10 gallons. Not 25mg of Milbemycin Oxime. Is that correct?

That is correct, each large dog tablet contains 23mg of Milbemycin Oxime. The tablet weighs just under 1 gram. You will be using 25mg (0.025grams) per 10 gallons.

What? Interceptor has 80% MO.. I feel real stupid right now. I will not hold you responsible. If I want to treat 90gallons of total water and I have the 51-100lb interceptor pills, will I only be using and estimated 1/4 pill or 10 pills. That is a big difference.

Well, into the 5th hour and hermit craps are dying, but not dead. My acro craps seem alive and well, I might of not dosed enough. the red bugs are not moving but still on the corals.

o.k - 12 hours later and water change and carbon completed after 6 hours of treatment. Bugs are dead, corals seem good. In reading the other thread about coral slime and pod population, they said corals did slime a little and some pods did survive. Well that is the same for me. My loses are , all of my hermet crabs (10)+ and acro crabs. 1 have 4 shrimps, 2 cleaner, 1 blood, and 1 CBS and alll doing well and eating the crabs. I will repeat treatment for the next 2 weeks.

Thank you so very much Dustin.

Eric

P.S one person stated that corals even looked brighter hours after treatment, well , I might be crazy, but I think so too.

O.k came home from work today to find 2-3 bugs running around on my bali. I have retreated at a higher dose as of 4:00pm with my skimmer off today. I did not have my skimmer off yesterday, I have a ASM G3 and all I did was lower the pipe to stop the foaming into the cup. I still have an acro crap alive today as well. I must of not caculated my water volume enough counting chiller and skimmer volume, and ect. what is the best way to disolve interceptor before putting into tank?

It doesnt dissolve very easily. You can use a pitcher to scoop in some up some water and swirl in small batches of the powdered medicine.

Vet offering to sell Interceptor for Red Bugs

Was browsing and not sure if anyone saw this but a vet is offering to help reefers in need of interceptor. (assuming this is not a fraud as I have no connection to them, others have vouched to its veracity) See:

If this helps a couple of you, I'm happy to have helped and a special thanks to Dustin for coming up with a tank-and-coral-saving treatment (despite what some naysayers have posted).

Jason

If any one cares, I did my 2nd treatment today, and all is well. My shrimps will be brain dead by the end of the third treatment. I can tell they are affected by the interceptor, real slow and squat down, I must of dosed just right. I am tired of mixing all this water for 2 water changes per week. I even have a pretty good system for water changes. I promis, I will not change any water for 2-3 months after this, hehe.

Thanks again Dustin, and to all who treated before me.

Eric.

Yes,about 5-10 minutes after the 25% water changes , the shrimps are moving around the tank. they still have funny movement, "swaying arms back and forth". By the next day or two the shrimps seem to be normal.

Crabs and Shrimp

Crabs and Shrimp

Dustin,

I want to treat my tank, but I do not want to kill my shrimp or crabs. My plan is to remove as many of these guys as possible and put them into my refugium. I plan to take the refugium offline and isolate it from the rest of my system and provide it with its own filtration. Then I will treat the system and wait a minimum for 2 weeks until I bring the refugium back on line. The refugium contains no Acros and I am thinking that the bugs would die after the 2 weeks since they have no acros to feed on....Is this a valid assumption? Or, do I really need to treat my refugium as well even though there are no acros in it?

Thanks !

I have read a little on these guys since becoming more and more of an SPS head. I don't think they actually feed on the Acro's do they? Also per Dustins Article the Larve could be floating in the fuge and wind up right back in the tank once they are connected back together. I could be wrong though

I guess it might be better to remove the crustaceans and put them in a heated temporary container until the 6 hour treatment and water changes are complete...then introduce them back into the main system.

Remember there have been several cases of people not doing all 3 treatments and getting the bugs right back. Also you take a risk of L:arve being on the crustaceans and introduced back to the tank when the crust. go back in.

I havent been following any new developments with the bugs, if there are any. It was reported several months ago that they are direct developing (having no larval stage) and that they can only survive without a food source for a few days. I don't know if this is all factual.
If you removed every last sliver of Acropora from your refugium, and left it offline for 3 to 4 weeks I would think you will probably be alright. It wont hurt to try. If it doesnt work you can always try treating again and do the whole thing.
