red gig

The verracruce looks like it extends too far down and the tentacles in the edge roll over like a mertens.

Do they spots on the underside go down all the way?

Does i have seen haddonis larger with a noticesble verrucrce

the verracue on ALL of my S. Gig's go about half way down the foot...
which looks the same as this one...

It's an interesting anemone- it came in four years ago from the Philippines, listed as a ricordia (!). It was about 3 inches across. It has maxed out now at 8 inches across and hasn't really grown in the past year. I'm pretty sure it's not a true haddoni (obviously seen plenty of those), but am also not convinced it is a gigantea. It's tentacles do vibrate occasionaly but nothing like the other gig in the same tank.

Jason,
I also have a Green carpet that I think is a Gigantea but really does have a lot of Haddoni characteristics. He is in my office tank. I will get some pictures with comparing Haddoni/Gigantea/and to your Red Carpet in mind. I try to post it here tomorrow.
I also had a Green carpet with characters between to two species but more Haddoni than Gigantea.
Knowing these two carpets and keeping both Haddoni and Gigantea in the past and at this time, I am convince that there are hybrids between the two species out there and they are not all that rare.

Wow! after reading your post it reminds me of my own yellow gigantea. I bought it locally from a fellow reefer 2.5 yrs ago, it was about 5". he had it for a couple of years before he sold it to me- and he bought it from another reefer and that guy had it for a few years. it has not grown at all for the first 1.5 years in my tank and yes i do feed all my nems about twice a month. it is wierd as i always thought gigs grows very big.....

and guess what? over the past 9-12 months, he's starting to grow and grow and now he is about 10" :eek1:

what i am saying is it can happen to your :D

I have to google and see where this anemone is. If I am anywhere in the area I will make an effort to come and steal it. :), at least a few pics.

i will try to remember this thread comes late August/early September when the US Open starts at Flushing Meadow and i will drop by to take video shoots and all that on my way to the Open :)

I don't want to bum anyone out, but I think the jury should still be out on this one. Although I have never seen colored verrucae on a haddoni, and I don't think her book in the last word in clownfish host anemones, Daphne Fautin says in her description of S. haddoni as sometimes having light rose to purple verrucae.

In the same picture that shows the purple verrucae, the tentacles on the edge look very haddoni-ish. I also think I may be seeing exocoelic tentacle differences.

I would love it to be a gigantea, so I would have a little more credibility as seeing one myself (in my eyes as well), but I am not sure it is. Hopefully Reefvette can see it in person and give a definite ID.

Hey Phender - couple of people told me that the red one @ reef raft is a gig. did you ever get a chance to see it?

Haddoni/Gigantea hybrid. What do you think?

Here is a picture of my Green Gigantea. He have a lot of the characteristic of a Haddoni.

First picture to the two anemones. The Tan Gigantea and the Green on side by side. Notice the tentacles of the green one are a lot shorter, but pretty long in compair to normal Haddoni tentacles.

This Green Gigantea has sky blue foot and light blueish purple veracuae, but it live on the sand atached to rock under the sand. Notice the shape of the tentacle tips, they are clasic for Gigantea with tappered ends. Even after I disturbed it to take pictures. You just got to take my word for it that it vibrate a lot in low water movement.
