Is there a difference ? Reason why I asked had a friend that has a desjardin tang has nice coloration .. Then today I got in a red sea desjardin and he is almost black with purple and yellow lines.. Of course both have the face freckles only difference is mine is 7 inches his is 6.. His tang is more carmel in coloration.. So maybe just age?

Mood, mine will be practically white one minute, and almost black the next. Its the dominant fish in my tank, and awfully moody at times, and with that comes the color changes...

^This or diet, yours is newly collected his has become accustom to whatever he feeds

Havent seen one like mine in years.. When his came in it was not dark at all pretty much still looks the same but thicker and he has had it over a year.. Maybe males are darker?

This, I've owned a few and the rich purple/yellow coloration was pretty mood based ime, but it was their "relaxed" color. I saw specimens at the LFS and owned by other people that looked faded and washed out, not sure if it was a combination of stress and diet or something else entirely. Desjardini just refers to the Red Sea sailfin though, as opposed to Pacific sailfin. There aren't multiple varieties beyond that.

Agreed, my desjardini get pale white when it is really excited or scared. And then it will go really dark, then bounce back to normal. Their distribution does span from red sea to Maldives and Sri Lanka though so I wouldnt be surprised with color variation based on where they were collected.

It is my understanding they are found as far east as Indonesia, and may have an overlapping distribution with Z. veliferum.

Desjaradini means from the Red Sea and has for as long as they have been selling them. I doubt any of the indo or Philippines caught ones live to make it to the trade

I used "Red Sea" as a common name, yes they are also collected from the Indian Ocean. I still firmly believe coloration on this species is a husbandry issue not collection region.

Agree that they can change color with mood, but mine have all also darkened as they get older. They get BIG really quickly too.
