Brent thanks, I will be adding mineral mud and the live rock is all just rubble rock I have in my RSM right now about 7 1/2 lbs. I was going to put in some chaeto that I was going to get from my lfs but they are now closed(long story) and the only other shop has some kind of grass I forget the name but they said they are not allowed to sell it due to some law. So I will have to look on ebay or somwhere else to find some. Now I just got an e mail my prefilter box will not be able to be shipped until next week.

Thanks again Brent. Well as I said before I won't have my prefilter overflow box until next week now so will have to wait, I will have some time to check around locally for some chaeto. Also I still need to find a tunze nano doc skimmer thought I had one but haven't heard back since this weekend.

130D

130D

For anyone interested...
I called Red Sea in Houston yesterday regarding the 130D. They are supposed to be released sometime in September. No word on price difference vs. earlier models of the 130.

jmoose - good to know. I've assumed that the 130D would just replace the previous 130 as a new model with a few minor improvements. It'll be interesting to find out if the skimmer works any better, and if it does if it will be offered for sale to 130 owners. I doubt very much that the tank dimensions have changed at all, so anything they've added, including the surface skimmer attachment , should hopefully fit the 130 as well. It may take a few months after release of the 130D to get any worthwhile reviews on whether any of the changes have really improved anything.

What brand of salt mix do you guys use? I had mostly been getting my water from my LFS which used Tropic Marin but since they are going out of business I had to start making my own again. I have a bag of Reef Crystals, which since I have started using I noticed that my ph, alkalinity and calcium levels have all been lower.

where did you get yours? earlier this year drs foster and smith had issues with low calcium in some batches. i got mine there and had to contact customer support about the problem

Snake thanks I didn't know about any of that. What I have is a bag for making 55 gallons. I had bought in from my now out of business LFS back around January. I have recently found another LFS here that sells saltwater for 50 cents a gallon, which is a real bargain I got 5 gallons from them the other day and everything was spot on. However they dont use reef crystals they use regular instant ocean. Guess I really can't complain thought for the price.

The filtration system is gone.

The filtration system is gone.

Hi all.
I uninstall th filtration system I added, I can't have the filtration system and the lights on at the same time, due to the heat the sumersible pump add to the aquaruim.
I could only use the pump for a few hours a day and It was not worth the erffort, plus to clean the pump it was going to be a pain in the @$$.

After uninstalling the pump and pipes, I tested the water, add 10 lbs of aragonite and placing the rock, I test teh water and had 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, and 2 ppm nitrates.

Last night I went to the LFS and got my first fish, is a Sailfin Blenie. I use the drip method to acclimatate the fish, and just a few minutes after I put it in the tank it started to eat like a pig!!
Here is a pic.

Well I came back from a small vacation and moy cyano on the rocks are gone but there is still sum on the back wall but not that much... solution must be making my lights come on really late in the day and stays till 1030...i feel bad cuz some fish are up but its nighttime for them

I noticed the other day I had a little bit of cyano in my tank but not to much trying to keep an eye on it. I was gone today for about 3 hours and the stuff is growing like crazy. I am not sure what to do as for now I just turned off the lights. I am trying to trace back what it is that has changed and the only thing I can figure for now is that I did a water change with 5 gallons of SW I got from a different LFS since the one I had been getting water from closed. I am about to go there now and see if they will tell me when they last changed their filters and if they will test their water with me there.

The best way to control cyano is to make sure the TDS on your RO water is 0 and there is good flow in the tank. Some brands of salt have phosphates in them which will feed cyano.

Once you have it, the best control is to siphon it out every couple days. This will control the spread. As you have seen, it can grow very quickly so you need to keep on top of it.

Thanks Brent. I just got back from the LFS where I got my water the other day. The manager there told me he didn't have any way to measure for TDS since their "expert" they had who handled all of their RO equipment quit about six months ago to start is own fish tank care/maintenance business. He said he would talk to the owner and get everything tested. I have an RO system here at the house but am waiting on new filters that I had to order since I can no longer find them locally. Also it is only a 25gpd and I am lucky if I can get 5gpd out of it.

Brent Thanks for the reminder on how to get rid of cyano. I'm having an attack right now. I think it's due to a few things - 1)putting too much new rock up in front not long ago, and disrupting the flow over the substrate. 2) After my last power outage I somehow messed up the timing on my lights and found 2 nights ago that I was running 10 - 11 hours of metal halide instead of the 7 hours I had been running. 3) I think I've been overfeeding by putting in too much flake food at one time to ensure everbody eats. Tonight I added a fighting conch, and a couple trochus & 2 small nerites. I'm hoping the conch will help keep the substrate turned over. By the time I added the rest of the snails the conch (about 1" long) was nowhere to be seen so I assume it immediately dug in. This weekend I'll move, or remove, some of that rock on the front bottom & open up my substrate once again to some flow. I was concerned my RO/DI filters needed replacing, and I tested my TDS on my RO/DI last night and it's still zero. So it has to be related to flow, excess food, and too many hours of light.

Brycek - hard to imagine an lfs selling water/salt water not being able to test TDS. Geesh - you can buy a TDS meter for $20 or less! Terrible way to run a business! And the test is a no-brainer & only takes a few seconds!

Reefmack, it really surprised me when I talked to the manager. I should have known better in that sense though it is a chain store about 7 in the area here and they change staff like some people change their........ Anyways I just ordered a meter for myself. I had always taken my RO and tank water to the now out of business LFS because they tested everything for free. I have my own test kit but never had a tds meter but will have one early next week now.

Good idea brycek. Plus, if you ever get your own RO/DI unit you can test your unit to be sure the filters & membrane don't need replacing. Very easy to use.
