Red Sea Reefer 170 build thread

Save your test kits....you won't have any ammonia...you have real live rock and sand!

I figured as much. ;) So glad you ship everything in sea water. It keeps it all alive! Southwest Airlines did a great job by the way. No damage to the boxes and no leaks.

More pics! Did some aquascaping so I have a good base set with room for the rest of my rock. So many tunicates and sponges. Of course lots of coralline. This is the kind of rock you'd look for in a tank that is years old. Just phenomenal.

And here is Benny the Blenny, as my kids have named him.

And 100% positive there is a pistol shrimp in there. I hear him pop off a few "rounds" once in a while. Mostly I think at the blenny or the crab, when they encroach on his pad. :p

Tank remains stable today same parameters as last night. Skimmer is even starting to pull skimmate now. I'm happy with my rock placement, though I definitely need to pick up a second MP10wqd soon.

I think the tank has settled nicely and should be ready for part 2 tomorrow I'd think?

The ATO on the reefer 170 sucks, so if anyone is planning on buying this tank plan on replacing it. The valve to shut off the ATO does not work at all so when you do water changes, the ATO dumps RODI into the tank. The float valve also seems rather flimsy. I'm planning on buying a smart ATO micro. I wish the ATO top off was bigger than 1.5g, I go through that much in two days so I constantly have to refill it. I'll use it with the smart ATO micro, but might find a larger holding tank to somehow fit at some point.

Do you not turn the pump off when you do a w/c? When I do a w/c change, I'll turn the main pump off then the water will rise in the sump closing off the top off valve.

I turn off the main pump yes, but even pulling out about 2 gallons of water the level drops below the float valve, so doing a 4 gallon water change is an issue. I guess I could pull water from the skimmer section of the sump instead.

Other than the ATO, it's fantastic. Really great tank and stand.

I agree man! The ATO is a complete joke... Well its a great idea and it makes the overall system look clean. Though my ATO box just kept emptying after a day. I'd get a text all the time from my lady, "tank is blowing bubbles again."

So I got fed up and threw on my Tunze 5017 ATO with a 5 gallon jug on the outside. It's been 5 days now and I'm not even half way done. Didn't want the jug look on the outside, but you just can't beat that!

Tank looks good man. I saw you mentioned on getting a second MP10, how come? I run the Gyre 130 on my tank, vertical, and was debating on replacing it with two MP10's on left/ride back wall on my Reefer 170.

With the way I am aquascaping I think I'm going to need the 2nd one in order to really reach the corners in the back.

Picked up a six line wrasse at LFS and put him into QT. He's exhibiting some slightly odd behavior that started today so I need to keep an eye. He kinda rolls over on his side whenever he sits on the bottom and he wedges himself under/next to the PVC pipe.

Be careful with 6 line wrasse's. They can be real a holes and can kill pretty much whatever you put in there.

So the wrasse in QT died, less than 18 hours after I got him. LFS said to bring it in for credit or whatnot. Cleaned out the QT. It's unfortunate but it happens in the hobby.

As for the display tank, a few more shots below. Also some ammonia in the tank today! .50 ppm. I removed the "sock" from the sump as I've never liked filter socks and it had a ton of gunk built up in it already so it's probably contributing to the ammonia. Hopefully I don't have a large die off of sponge or something that will cause ammonia spike, but I'm prepared and have 35 gallons ready for water changes.

Sorry the iphone struggles with blue lighting so the pics aren't the best!
