Red Slime Problem

Ahh.... a very good point Sk8r... thank you. Might as well dose red slime now and then dose with MB7 to replenish bacterial colonies along with the vodka as a carbon source for the bacteria to consume.

Thanks!

Nutrient export is unbelievably important...no doubt about it. But, i have found that any time I used red slime remover and relied on my protein skimmer to handle the rest...it was never enough. I always ended with a bloom of hair algae that was much worse than the slime problem. Hair algae was definitely my worst nightmare!!!! Since adding the rowaphos to the equation...this problem has been avoided. My tank is 90 gallons and I use a euro reef that is said to handle 200+gallons...no skimmer shortage here!!

So I did my red slime treatment and everything is going good. From what I see my red slime is completely gone. However, I can't get my skimmer to stop running like crazy. So far I have removed 20 gallons of water and my skimmer is still instantly overflowing when I turn it on. Should I just keep running it and sooner or later it will stop or should I remove even more water?

I had a serious problem for about 6 months. Water changes and every other suggestion I read online did not work. What worked for me was increasing the water flow in the tank big time. I installed 6 Vortex MP60's in my 375 gallon tank and used a turkey baster to flush the rock and substrate 3 to 4 times a day in addition to vacuuming the substrate. After 1 week the problem was cleared up. I learned to keep the substrate clean and stirred up.

Be sure sunlight hasn't moved with the change of seasons: if it hits your tank during the day, you're almost guaranteed an outbreak. Cyano adapts to 'eat' just about anything, but a well-tuned skimmer and a 3 day lights-out monthly will make a pretty rapid improvement in most cases. The one thing we can take away that most varieties need is light. And if yours goes away at night and reappears during the day, it'll respond.
