Redspot Cardinalfish - Apogon parvulus

Well I hope I have good success with my 5 I purchased from DD on Friday. I have been looking at them for quite some time and I finally pulled the trigger. I hope to have them on Tuesday. I think they should look great in my 29 gallon Bio-Cube! :)

Well, I got me spots, red spot cardinals that is, today from the Divers Den. After acclimating them, they are schooling and out in the open! And after a few hours, I fed them some Hikari mysis and they chowed down on it!

I would like to say something about their packing! It was incredible! First of all, the box was large enough, you could easily put a micro-wave oven in it! Plenty of styrofoam peanuts and 2 large heat packs that was still very warm to the touch. But the thing that really blew me away was, would you believe they actually triple bagged each of the 5 fish individually. There was about a half gallon of water in each bag! I have not seen packaging like this before.

Welcome to shopping from the Diver's Den. ;)

Just thought I'd post a pic of my red spots in my tank. They are eating like pigs!

I bought a total of 8 and currently have 5, 3 weeks later. All 3 that died did so within the first week. 1 didn't even make an hour trip from my lfs. There are currently in my 130 gallons sps tank with a yellow tank, 2 clowns and 4 lyretail anthias. They eat like pigs and compete with the other fish for all types of foods from frozen to flake foods.

Just wondered if anyone has successfully breed them? I've read a topic on mofib where someone got the larva up to day 3 and he didn't post after that .

I've had a male carrying eggs for 6 day now. I caught him and he is in a tank with an air pump still with the eggs in his mouth.

Any links to anyone that has raised the fry would be great.

Thanks
Chris

Update to the above.

unfortunately none of them made it that night and were all dead. I think I was to blame having the air pump on too strong for them. Got some pictures off my camera. There's 3 main pictures with 2 copy's that are zoomed in a bit. On one picture I counted 46, that was about half the jug which had most the larva. I guess there was probably at least another 20 on the other side, so roughly 65 larva's.

Another update from today.

My Male red spot is holding eggs again. His mouth looks a lot bigger this time already! It's been 18 days since he last was holding the eggs and about 11 days since he released the last batch.

As I write this the other red spots seem to be chasing the male. Also looked like my Anthias was trying it last night

I asked Live Aquaria about their attempts at raising fry. They have not been successful yet, as finding suitable first foods seems to be a problem.

..so have we cracked how to keep these buggers? Was it just the consistent mishandling after collection that was to blame?

I had about 20 a couple years ago, and I lost all but 1 within 8 months.. The smallest fish would always kick the bucket..

I bought a group of 10 from DD. LiveAquaria is the place to buy from. They really care about packaging. 1 was lost in shipping, but the other 9 acclimated well and are all shoaling in the water column. They are eating really well... frozen reef plankton and spirulina brine shrimp. This is one of the coolest additions to a reef tank IMO; defiantly filling a void and making the reef look more natural. I'll try to post a pic later.

How long have you had them?

I kind of forgot about this thread, so an update.

As of now I have 1 of the 5 I bought from DD. I would lose them 1 by 1. The one I have now was the largest of the group. I wonder if, like other cardinalfish, it had something to do with their deaths due to aggression?

I bought 5 from a LFS and 1 died within the first two days. The other four are plump and very active in the tank. I might add another 4-5 as they are very active and stay small. Great little schooling fish and remind me of freshwater neon tetras.

I couldn't agree more... a great addition for people looking for a schooling fish in a smaller tank... this is my group in one of my smaller systems... a custom 60 gallon... and they really benefit from the love that the Diver's Den gives them... :)

Beautiful tank. How long have you had your cardinals? Do you notice any aggression towards each other?I am thinking of getting group of 20-30 for my 120 gal.but don't want to end up with only one after a while, like the guy from post above.

Thank you... I have that aquarium profiled in this article...

http://reefkeeping.com/joomla/index.php/current-issue/article/76-tank-of-the-month

It's been maybe ten months since I've had the parvulus... Mark, I've owned many cardinal groups through the years, and some have gotten VERY aggressive towards eachother over the long term... these are not too aggressive yet, but I guess time will tell... these are probably not as long lived as other cardinals... try your group if you want to be a pioneer... you're paying for the experience! :)
