Reef Life

Well there's a couple of things to consider.
One, Reef Life would be a commercial account not a residential one where what one does in the privacy of one's home is their business. We will be subject to paying record royalties for playing music if we're getting it for free.

Two, the TV is in the kids play room so I don't think I'll be looking for any adult style entertainment, and......

Since Andrea (Speckled Grouper) is a purveyor of satellite equipment and services and has been for a number of years I will listen carefully to her advice when it comes to getting so-called "free" services as I don't want to spend $$$ I don't have on attorneys.

Thanks for the tip though.:)

What are Free To Air (FTA) channels?

Free To Air (FTA) channels are digital channels that are not encrypted by the service provider and require no subscription or monthly payment. They are provided free of charge by the provider and are perfectly legal to receive with an FTA receiver.

Are there any Dish Network or DirecTV channels that are FTA?

Almost all of the channels provided by these companies are NOT FTA. The channels are encrypted and require an authorized receiver and monthly subscription.

Can I use an FTA receiver to receive premium channels from Dish Network or DirecTV?

Absolutely not. These channels require subscription and special receivers supplied by the service provider only. Any tampering with your FTA receiver (whether by hardware or software modification) to try to receive the premium channels without paying is not only a violation of the law and unethical, but also will void the warranty on your receiver and may hinder it unusable.

Can I use my existing 18" dish (DirecTV or DN dishes) to receive FTA?

No. All FTA channels are available on satellites with much weaker signal than DSS. The minimum size dish required is 30". Also, FTA and DBS / DSS satellites require different type of LNB’s.

What size dish I need for the Free to air channels?

For the C-Band signal channels you will need a 6-10ft dish.
For KU-band channels you will need a 30 inch dish and up.

Talk to a dealer. If you let them put their name up that you have their service, they will prolly cut you a Deal(they ere going to give us the dish and service for a year for free if they had their business cards out). I will see if I still have the business card tomorrow, but there was a company in Davie that wanted to do it for us at my store...but corporate wouldnt allow it! If I find It I will let you know

No biggie Eric.

You are 21, right? I have been a Satellite Dealer from before you where born, since 1984 to be exact ........;)

ohhh, I was wonder why you got so offended!!! j/k, I barely watch cable myself, it was just a suggestion.

Back on track!

I haven't been to their new location, Once we get our second tank together I'll be sure to check it out.

i went there the other day, bought a cucumber, fish flakes. very nice store. the coral display tank is awesome! love the t5s too.

Not to try and bash the place but I stopped in there yesterday and a bunch of the fish were dead in the tanks, alot of the tangs had scratchs on their faces from scratching the rock that was put in the tank with them. Also alot of the corals didnt seem all to up to par. The owner seems really cool and the layout is great, maybe I went on the wrong day. Well needless to say I drove over to reefs edge over on orange drive and 441 and WOW they have some great stuff their!!! Like grade A awesome corals and fish. The owner their is really friendly as well. Everyone should go take a look at that place. Just my .02

-Matt

Oh yea, the owner also does trade-ins. He traded me a frag filled with mushrooms for my snowflake eel and a damsel! Really if you havnt checked them out, its a must!

Ditto on Reef's Edge.

As for Reef Life, what time did you go? If he just opened the store, the lights probably just came on, accounting for the corals. The day I went, there was a beautiful brain of some sort, very fleshy, but like a maze brain (I think it's from Rogger's tank). A frogspawn or torch had laid over on top of it, burning the living heck out of the brain. 4 days later, it was almost completely healed, and 3 more days later, you can't even see a scar. As for the fish, maybe he got a shipment in the night before, and had just opened as you were getting there... Anyway, been to his shops many times and never saw that.

Well Matt, for not trying to bash a place you did a very good job of doing just that.

Yesterday as in Thursday? I was there and didn't see any dead fish, as a matter of fact I didn't see that many tangs and none seemed particularly stressed. And the coral looked as gorgeous as usual. You sure you didn't mean Pet World up the street?

I spoke to Mike and he said it isn't true. He explained his routine to me. lol

Get to the shop, clean out any deads and feed them.

No not pet world, Reef Life. Like I said before "I guess I went on the wrong day." Everyone here seems to love the place so who am I to say anything bad about the place? I put in my .02 and got bashed on, even by the owner^^^, which I have meet before and is very nice. Ok I have said what I needed to say and I'm done. :smokin:

Then you went on to say that the corals weren't up to par. I'm not bashing you, I'm just pointing out that you bashed us when you said it wasn't your intent to. There were several club members in the shop Thursday and none of them seemed to have the amazing sense of observation you appear to possess.

It seems to me you found a store you like better than ours, which is your prerogative. In the future I would hope that you would consider what the ramification of a few ill willed words in a forum read by many can do to a shop that's trying to grow.

To put down one shop in an effort to promote another is just plain rude.

OH MY GAWSH this store is terrible customer service sucks, miserable employees, dead or dieing livestock, poor water quality, everything that embodies poor abilities and ethics................

.

.

oh wait a minute that's petco, big als and BR....

I haven't yet stopped by the new store but as long as quality and service is like the old one everything will be great plus a facelift cant hurt.

I'm pretty sure thats the point of a forum. To view different peoples experiences with trying new things and gaining new knowledge that everyone can freely share. This thread was not started so that everyone in South Florida could say amazingly great things about your store, there had to be at least 1 person that didn't share the same experiences that everyone else had, and I guess it had to be me. So call me rude because I thinks thats the point of this forum! Did you check out the Reefs Edge thread yet? People have said some bad things about them but is the owner on there calling people out? nope. I think it's just the way it goes, if your store was the best and no one had anything bad to say then why would anyone go to any other LFS besides yours? I'll just say I'm new to reef keeping and have no idea what I'm talking about so no one pay attention to any of my posts.

P.S. Reefs Edge doesn't sell any of the coral in the middle tank unless the owner is there, so there isan't as many corals available as Reef Life...

Reefs Edge 1-1 Reef Life
Are you happy now?

Hows the LR at Reef life. ?

Hi everybody, I'm a lurker.

I haven't been in any stores in the last 14 or 15 months. When I was setting up my tanks, though, Reef Life (or at least a store called reef life over near Bass Pro) was my FAVORITE store of all.

The LR that I always picked there was aquacultured rock from Haiti (I believe). Sure, I bought pieces from everywhere to increase the biodiversity of my system, but I couldn't get enough of that stuff. I bought about 200 pounds total for my tanks and another 100 or so that I donated to a tank for a buddy's kids.

The corraline was purple, orange, and red. There were always tons of hitch-hikers on the rocks. You could NEVER tell what might end up in your tank, from urchins to nudibranchs to sponges. Sometimes, you'd even find LPS growing a couple of months later.

My favorite fish are tangs and I bought my first one there, an African named Myrtle. I bought my first hawkfish there and I always went there for snails and hermits.

The best creature I've ever had in a reef tank was purchased there (a strawberry crab that gave me years of entertainment).

Before you say I am apple polishing, Patrick didn't even like me. Mainly, he thought I was nuts for asking to buy some of the rubble and goo from the bottom of his LR tank (even offering to do the digging myself lol). So I'm not even a customer he likes and I had that kind of good dealings with him!

Anyway, just to give you some background, my name is Doug and I live in Broward County. I set up my first aquarium (75 gallon) in 2002 and, over time, it grew into one heck of a softies reef tank. I started colelcting corals and LR in early 04.

I added several tanks but, during the blackout after Wilma, I lost everything except for 5 fish. I was able to keep the tanks oxygenated but I couldn't control the temperature extremes. All of my corals and 15 different fish died over the course of two weeks.

Now, I have a 40 gallon bow front tank full of "bare" live rock where my corals were (at least the pods survived to keep my mandarin fed!), a 35 gallon "pod tank" with 2 clowns, a beautiful fish I have never identified (black "wedged" face/head and a purple body, and my first tank, which eventually became a 75 gallon "grazing tang" tank I grew Gracilaria in, The world's shyest yellow tang still lives there but the algae he grazed died off.

Let's say I was upset by the loss of everything and I've had less and less interest in the hobby. I rebuilt a Jeep. However, earlier this week, the bug bit againhard because I'm picking up a 180 gallon tank from a friend by the end of the month. I want my reef back, you know? And lots of tangs.

So that's my background. Hi everybody.
