"The new craze is to charge what an e-bay bidding auction would get bottom line without the risk of a low bid. Sellers at every level (individual, retail wholesale) are trying this method of profiteer marketing of their "rarities".
I abhor it and don't practice it. I use a simple mathmatical calculation, cost x 2 = price, across the board. I have learned very recently that a store in close proximity to mine is selling zooanthids in minute frags for collosal prices and defends the practice by telling customers that these are what they sell for on e-bay. Gee, teriffic, then sell them on e-bay and quit trying to rape your customer base. Otherwise, they'll become someone else's customer base."
I've never been big on posting on Reef Central or online for that matter at all regarding this hobby. But, and after reading this post and several other posts since Pat has opened his new store, I felt it necessary to respond.
Pat, since you won't name names of other stores in "close proximity" to you I will. The only two stores near you are Age of Aquarium (which hasn't opened yet) and Reef's Edge. What makes you think that just because you aren't naming names that you aren't bashing? Do you think that you are above everyone else in this hobby? I've seen your posts and the second that someone even mentions something that they do not like about you or your store you are lightning quick to jump all over them and defend yourself. You also say that you frown on bashing but yet time and again I see you posting things which put yourself in a good light so that you can gain business from this. You also have an obvious "staff" of people who will back you up online. I think you are a game player and a manipulator you'll do whatever it takes to make only yourself look good at the expense of others. It's not right. There are many people who speak badly of you and your store. But they don't come online and call you a "fish killer" or that you were just plain rude to them. I'm going to throw this out there in your style: I suggest you start paying attention to making money rather than resorting to gossiping online and refinancing your home to pay the bills because you just aren't making it.
I have been to Reef's Edge and for those of you who haven't I would recommend it, judge it for yourself. I have bought many corals from Reef's Edge and not all of the time are they the cheapest. But, their livestock is always extremely healthy and that is what keeps me coming back. I have been bugging them for months to get frags in the store. I was in this past weekend and purchased several frags. I purchased two pieces of blastomussa merletti for around $30.00/piece. The frags came out to between 5-6 polyps each now that I think about it. Which came out to be around $5.00-$6.00 per polyp. I have had my eye on the merletti for some time now and did not want to spend $150.00 for the 5"-7" pieces that he has had there. I was happy to be able to get a frag of it for my nano. I also purchased many zoanthids from the back frag tank the most expensive one was what was called "Eye of Rah" a really beautiful piece that had around 20 polyps for $45. Which comes out to be around $2.25 per polyp. This is an average price for this zoa frag of that quality. I also purchased many other zoanthids that day for from between $9.99 -$20.00 that had between 10 and 25 polyps on each rock.
I'm on ebay a lot , not buying much livestock, but checking things out and never have I seen a frag from Reef's Edge for sale. Maybe online sources put frags out there for sale, such as on ebay, and people are selling frags for good money, but I tend to concentrate on my LFS's and look for unique pieces that catch my eye.
I think that the gossip games have got to stop. And people, are you from the dark ages?? If someone posts something negative about a store are you automatically not going to go? Come on, that is ridiculous. You can't make up your own mind? It almost seems as if Reef Life is adopting a "Godfather" view by trying to manipulate and tries to play it off as if he is not.
