Reeflo Orca 250

Hi guys,

I am considering a lot in change my Euro-Reef RC 500 that I have in my 180 gal. Reef Aquarium heavly stocked with fishes (tangs, angels, triggers, etc.) with an Orca 250 Skimmer w/Orca Gold pump.

So what do you think and recommend me my friends ???

Do you do this change also ??

Which one of this both skimmers do you think is better ?

Any comment or recommendation will be very helpful for me.

Thank you in advance!!

Mario

Hi,

WE were running an RC1000 on one of our coral systems and replaced it with an Orca 250. The RC1000 pulled out a little more, but was also 3 times as big. WE just had too many pump problems with the RC1000, it's just collecting dust now.

So if you were looking to buy, i would say it's a very good option. Since you already own the RC500, not sure if it's that much different to change out an already existing skimmer. If you are starting to have to replace pumps though, might be worth it, since Euro's pumps on those are around 300 each.

You may get a better response on the reeflo thread.

I wish I could help you but I have never messed with the ER 500 before. All that I can do is compare their stats. The Reeflo 250 is a great performing skimmer and the Reeflo 250 Pro is a skimming beast to say the least. But without actually messing with the skimmer in question I can't tell you one is a whole lot better than the other. All I can say is I run a Reeflo 200 on my 180gal reef and it works great and works even better after I converted it into a reeflo 200 PRO. Is the ER not performing well and is the reason for the suggested upgrade? That skimmer should be more than enough for your system, no?

Hi my dear friend Jason,

Well I have my RC 500 for more than 1 year and I don´t have yet any problem with its pumps, you are talking about the Eheim 1262 ??

And you compare the Orca 250 with an Euro RC 1000 that is the double of the RC 500, so maybe I will upgrade with the Orca 250 vs. the RC 500, right ?

Thanx.

Mario

HI,

It's on our hard coral system tanks. It's 4 tanks, probably around 125g tanks, then twin 150g sumps with refugium. So probably close to 800g system.

Is there such a thing as an owner's manual for the Orca 250 (mine has the optional Baldor motor) ?

I see reference to adjustment of the airvalve, etc., but have no clue as I obtained mine used from a local reefer.

I have been weighing whether to buy the upgrade kit or go another way for my 500+ gallon system...

Would I gain by installing a Pro Kit collection cup now and defer the needle wheel change until I have to take the skimmer down for maintenance and cleaning?

You're not really going to gain by just getting the larger neck now. You'll have a little more reaction space, but that's all. Wait until you get the new impeller to install the bigger cup.
