Reefstock March 8th at the Curtis Hotel

I too decided to take a break and watch Mitch Carl. Good info and a lot of it, I hope some is on the SECORE website. and I actually have a reason to go to Omaha. Some of the things they are doing at the Henry Doorly Zoo look really cool.

I personally thought it was great. Seeing people talking and hanging out. I think it went fairly well for this being the first attempt at anything like this. I seen tons of nice frags being sold, heck they were even selling them for half price. My hat goes off to all who helped pull this together and gave me an enjoyable Saturday afternoon....... :)

My biggest complaint - how to get some of Cliff's doggone luck at the raffle event rubbing off on the rest of us hehe!

Been trying to do that for the last year, I even stand next to him, buy tickets in front of him; behind him and nothing works.

It must be his Irish herritage.

I went over that in my talk...oh, that was probably while you were sleeping. Guess I need to brush up on my speaking skills.
Mitch

Nah, it was a long couple of days juggling my own day jobber and helping with the event, your talk was the first time I could sit down since wednesday... I'll have to smack one of the other guys and see if they can tell me whatcha said he he.

Question for you guys who set the event up... Do you have any contact info for the gentleman who was from Bikini Reef, or Bikini Corals? Does he have a website or anything? Feel free to PM me if you have any info to get ahold of him! Thanks for the fun time!

cheers~!

Hmmm I honestly don't know who you are talking about, it might be one of the guys Ki brought with him.
I'd call key's island and ask him.

Nobody at Aquamart put on the show, they we're a major sponsor and really helped out with a ton of things though!
Jake and I organized it all and our club members helped out with all the staff.
Just wanted to square that away so nobody at Aquamart gets drug through the mud for putting on such a failure of a show.

nope, I cant take any credit for this one. I just set up the equipment and livestock we brought. brought a few things others forgot but I think any of us would have done that. Jake and his recruits are the ones to thank. I did not meet the bikini reef person but can ask at work. PM coralite and he should know. If I remember what Mitch said correctly, I believe they were feeding a mixture of whatever they could find... Phytoplankton, rotifers, arcti pods, cyclopeeze, etc..

not a failure a learning experiance. I could have swore dave was talking about one of his guys was the main or a key player in the show hmm maybe wrong or miss understood. Sorry

You know it's hard to say weather we'll want to do this again.
I think we may stick to C/S shows and let the RMRC give you guys all the shows up there. We really thought we'd give you guys something fun and good, obviously there is a lot of tension in Denver and tension between the RMRC and SCMAS.
We tried, we really did and it will be up to the president of our club next year weather he/she wants to go through the trouble to do it again.

We'll concentrate our effort on the C/S show every October and try to get over the many logistics problems we had in Denver.

Thanks to the many people that attended ReefStock, you guys sure do have a lot of people in Denver and that is really great! RMRC is lucky to have such a huge following and such a large reef enthusiast base!

what the is going on

what the is going on

Sorry but alls I hear from everyone is wha wha wha. Even the ones who put the event on. No one seems to be able to take any criticism. Or even realizes truly what these events are for.
I was at the event and and over all thought the event went rater well. Great turn out for the FIRST ONE .
Are there things that need improvement of course. Is there ever an event that goes off without a hitch. I haven't seen one yet.
There is always room for improvement. ( reefkoi) don't take things so personal. You all did a great job for a first event.
So what it didn't go as planed or as everyone says it should have thats why there is always next. Since their are so many people with so much input why not extend the offer for written help and ideas. Mull over them and see what happens next year. Better yet ask for some donations from them to better plan and execute.
I now it all take time but lets all put up or shut up. Personally i enjoy these events and they are already far and few. Lets not shut another one down over a few comments.
Instead lets all as fellow reefers that have nothing better to stick our hard earned dollars into stick together and try to make the few events we do have here in the rockies the best. One that people are willing to travel for. Lets support each other and the cause these events are brought together for.

Well anyways thats what i think and I really hope you all keep it together for one next year. I will be there.

I want o thank everyone involved in making this the best event Denver has had.

Let me go over how much was involved to set this up.

1) Arranging for a spot. Jake called around, found a facility that had enough room for the event plus another room for the speakers.

2) Sponsors. Jake called around and found sponsors for the event. This is what held the cost down. Thanks to Sera Marine, AquaMart, Reef Nutrition, SCMAS and the other sponsors. Without them this event would have been expensive.

3) Speakers. The speakers were awesome. This all had to be arranged.

4) The Raffle. Someone had to go around and ask different places to donate to the raffle.

5) Advertising. Once again a lot of work.

6) Set up. The tanks were brought down from CS to use for the frags. This had never been done before in Denver and made it much easier for the people to see the frags. My hat goes off to all of the effort that was needed to set this up. I personally bought 4 frags and a Sea Hare.

7) The food. Sure there wasn't enough, but it was expensive and hard to predict how much we needed.

Many lessons were learned in the planning and execution of this event. Hopefully the community will come together to make the next event even better. I know that those of us at DARC really enjoyed the event and we thank all for the effort that they put out to make this a great event. I esp thank all of those who came don on Friday to help set up, including Chris, Russ, Tim, John, Joe, Will Mike and all of the others.

You know it's hard to say weather we'll want to do this again.

Putting on a show is a ton of work and you deserve credit for the work you put into it. I was planning to go then had to work at the last minute, but from what I've heard and from reading here it sounds like overall things went ok despite some snags. There's always room for improving the next one, maybe give some time for the dust to settle and then think about plans for another one.

We really thought we'd give you guys something fun and good, obviously there is a lot of tension in Denver and tension between the RMRC and SCMAS.

I have not lived in Colorado long so I don't know all the history, but I just don't get this whole "tension" thing. I hope the idea does not continue to get perpetuated because I'd like to think for any of the clubs in the area the ultimate goal is to provide something of value to all the reefers in the area, no matter who provides it.

(For the record I'm an RMRC board member but this is my personal opinion here and I'm not speaking on behalf of the board or the club.)

The DARC folks and the RMRC folks had a lot of good discussion a while back and from what I saw it basically came down to different philosphies about how a club could/should be run. The two clubs take different approaches and fill different needs depending on what people are looking for in a club, and some people participate in both of them. I don't see anything wrong with that and I don't see that as "tension".

As far as tension between SCMAS and RMRC, I don't really know anything about the history so I don't know where that comes from. SCMAS folks come to RMRC events and post here and at rmrc.info and we appreciate their participation, and I think the reverse is also true. I do know that RMRC has approached SCMAS a couple times lately about doing things and has been told something to the effect of "our bylaws don't allow us to associate with other clubs and that's why we can't plan stuff together". But then I see SCMAS and DARC collaborating on ReefStock, and now planning a joint DARC/SCMAS frag swap for April, so I don't know what to make of that.

As far as I'm concerned, the more events that happen in the area the better, no matter who puts them on. If the clubs can work together and that helps to make things happen or share speaker/venue costs or whatever, even better, but in any case area reefers get something of value out of it.

Our by laws do not say that, feel free to log into thescmas.com and read them.

II.2.a The Southern Colorado Marine Aquarist Society shall not be affiliated with any other organization or entity. This can only be changed by a 3/4 (three quarter) vote by the members and a 4-1 vote by the Board of directors.

Nothings says that we can't coordinate and plan events. We just don't want to pay to be a part of RMRC.

This goes back about 2 1/2 to 3 years ago when RMRC was the only game in town and there was a split into the 3 distinctive clubs you have now.

I am not a SCMAS board member so I am not speaking for them. This is just from what I know as one of the original founders of SCMAS and being the previous treasurer.

Thanks for the link to the bylaws. Whether or not it agrees with the bylaws it's what I heard was told to the RMRC board.

I wasn't talking about anything where people would be paying to be part of RMRC, I was just describing what I've been told the response was when RMRC approached SCMAS about doing some events together.

I think a part of the reason SCMAS sharing an event with RMRC has not taken place is the different in philosophies on the money issues between the two clubs.

Scmas has taken the no membership fee route and rely on monthly raffle proceeds and keeping it as cheap as possible for their members. They try to hold events and work within that type of budget.

RMRC from what I hear cant keep their hands out of their members pockets for anything they want to do. I don't mean that to sound bad but can't figure out another way to say it. I'm also not saying that's a bad thing, just another way of running a club.

My own personnel observation is that SCMAS is treating their club still as a hobby and RMRC is treating it more like a business.
