So when i first add my test fish i will use the two perculas and this will be in 4 or 5 weeks depending on the water.

RT6,
It may not be necessary to wait another 5 weeks to add the percs to the dispaly tank.
As long as the tank has cycled, you have beneficial bacteria growing and you have determined the water is stable, go ahead and add the percs.

What is the status on the new lights?

Is the skimmer pulling anything out of the water column?

Great discussion on the Tangs, BTW. Glad to see you have made an INFORMED decision on fish stocking.

Have you found a local reef club yet?

Ok thanks rum lad i really want to make sure my water is good before i add anything to the display tank. I also still have to put the sand and cheto in the fuge will be doing that hopefully this weekend. I want to put a couple more rocks in to make room for the tangs. As for the lights i will be getting that in 1 or 2 weeks hopefully. The skimmer is doing great. I have found a local reef club.

Ok guys well today i called me LFS about the skimmer because it was not working right. The whole time i was running the skimmer wrong. It still collected so bad stuff but it wasnt black like it was suppose to be. So i have to wait a couples days to a week before my skimmer actually starts to run the right way.

called me LFS about the skimmer because it was not working right

What made you think it was working great before, and what made you think it wasn't working correctly 12 hours later? Just curious.

That particular skimmer is troublesome. Either it works, or it doesn't. Some people modify them to make them work better, but I've not seen the mod myself.

Well before i knew that the skimmer was not working as good as it should of been. It was still pulling out some bad stuff. So now i am running it right just have to wait for the bubbles to get sticky so the skimmer will actually collect more bad things.

When Melev asks a question like, oh, I don't know "How did you know it was working before..." and you answer with "Well before i knew that the skimmer was not working as good as it should of been" how do you expect the thread to move along, let alone be exciting?
We told you before RT6, that you need to feed us the information for us to reply with more questions, comments etc.

Now, once again, how did you realize the skimmer was not working properly and A) what did you do to change it B) how is it different now?
If you tell us these things, perhaps someone else will A) Learn something new about their skimmer B) Tell you how they fixed the same problem, or even better, how they made that same skimmer work better.

And, pictures always help to revive a thread.

How is your sick tang doing these days, any better?

See if you can reply to that question in a way that makes people want to respond.

Good Luck.

ok sorry i was not making this thread the way it should of been first ill start of with the skimmer.

Ok well the skimmer was working great and was pulling stuff out. But it wasnt pulling out as much as i liked it to be doing. The stuff that it was pulling out was not black and brown like i see in everybody else's skimmers. Ok so this is what i was doing. My skimmer was pulling out the stuff like i said but one thing that i was doing wrong was i did not let the bubbles that the skimmer was producing to get sticky. So there for the bubbles were wet and they were putting water into the suction cup. I wanted to dry skim. So after i figured out that the skimmer wasn't properly working i called the fish store to ask the question. " I dont think my skimmer is working right because it is not producing the bad black and brown stuff in the cup." They said ok i know what your problem is so they told me to take all the water out of the suction cup. So i did, then they told me to let the bubbles that the skimmer produces to sit an 1in above the cup line. This would let the bubbles get sticky and then the bubbles would make that brown and black stuff that is bad. So now i have to wait a couple of days for the bubbles to be working properly. After this the skimmer should start to produce the black and brown stuff that is bad. That's what i was doing wrong.

As for the tang. The blue hippo is still not better i am trying very hard but it doesnt seem to be doing as much as i would like it to do. The blue hippo has HLLE and it is very bad because i did not take action right away and i paid for it. So now i am trying to get this fish better buy feeding him nori, flakes, pellets, brine, Vit. A B C. Hopefully later down the road this fish will get better and i can give him a better home then what he is in now.

Better, much better.
As for the skimmer, you have to realize that there may not be that nuch bad stuff (protein) in your water at this point because you don't have much of a bioload, yet. Patience, patience.

Keep at it with the fish, you'll win in the end

Tank looks good! Good luck with the build. I would've freaked out to have a 90 gallon tank at 15, but I would've also probably messed it up. Great job on nailing down the boring-but-necessary details. It will all pay off soon with some happy fish and corals.

Thanks for the replys guys.

There might not be to much in the tank for the skimmer to suck up but there is. I know this because i have looked at my filter socks and my sponge in-side the sump and they are full of dirt. Also as soon as i dumped out the old water and put new water in a couple of hours later they water would have things floating in it and the water would be a cloudy color. I think i soon as i get the skimmer working properly i think i should be pulling a lot of stuff out. This will help lower my levels which will be a very good thing.

Thanks for the reply Abraxos. I know i am thrilled to have a tank this is early in my life and i am loving every second. yes there will be things that you mess up here and there and you learn from them. This will help me in the long run when i set-up that big tank that i dream of. I learn something new everyday being on RC or just doing some research. This is why i love this hobby its so enjoyable. One thing bad about having a tank when you are young is that it is very hard to get money and this is why this is taking so long but i had the patience. But i am very glad i started early because i started something that the family can all sit down and talk about and look at. The funny thing is that sometimes my parents know what they are talking about ( what are they thinking) they are always wrong though. Glad you could join the thread i think that this thread will gain in people and become a better thread then it already is.

With filter socks and sponges trapping waste and particulates, there is less in the water for the skimmer to extract.

My skimmer pulls out a ton of ugly stuff, but I don't use socks or sponges. Here's a picture from a few days ago, after 2 or 3 days of skimming. That is about 1 gallon of skimmate.

Amazing melev. I hope my skimmer does that when it is up and running properly. When i did that my water that it was producing did not look that bad but it was still a little brown.
