yes got the light. i dont think moving the heater will matter because i have seen the heater go on a couple of times but what do you think about them telling me i can have a reef tank at 75 degrees

This is making no sense at all. You said they are turning on and off. However, you also said they are set to their maximum setting, which would mean they never turn off, unless they reach a higher (matching) temperature.

Which is it?

What thermometer are you using? The sticker kind? Those things are notoriously inaccurate, peeled off or not.

no iam using a digital thermometer. The heaters are not all the way up they are set at 82 degrees and turn on and off.

Sigh...I really think this is pointless.

If both heaters are turning off and on, then their internal thermostat thinks the temperature is whatever you have the setting at. If they are both doing this, then I seriously doubt they are both broken.

Have you tried to use a different thermometer like so many people have suggested? If not, then you really have no idea what the temperature of your tank is. If you have decent heaters I would almost trust their thermostat more than those of those cheapo digital thermometers.

...I feel like an enabler... :)

lol i dont think its the thermometers because the temp switchs when i bring it to another tank. How do you guys think the tank will do at 75 degrees??

I explained this to you about 15 pages ago. The numbers on the heaters don't matter. Ignore them. Get the temperature of the tank where it needs to be, and that will be the set point on your heaters.

So if each heater needs to be set on 84F to get the tank to 79.5, so be it. That doesn't matter. What does matter is if your tank overheats, and that is your job to avoid at all costs. For now, crank the heaters up to 85F and let us know the tank temperature tomorrow.

ok thanks melev. Sorry about this whole thing i know this has been very frustrating for everybody well maybe not everybody but definitely. One last thing what do you think about 75 degrees as the temp in the tank.

I won't run a tank that cool. The corals we purchase are quite often from areas where they are normally at 80F, which is why I have my tank at 79 to 80 each day.

geeze. lol. just try another freakin $4 thermo hahaha

just cuz it changes when put in another tank, doesn't mean anything. could be off by 10 degrees anywhere you put it.

and BTW, ya, I've left a heater in to "calibrate" unplugged, and came back later like "this thing is JUNK!...wait, it's not plugged in

haha, good luck.

ok but would if be that big of a problem. The LFS said the corals do best in lower temp tanks but you can never trust a LFS.

LOL sk8rreefgeek i will definitely go get another heater when i can.

Heater?!

dude what the heck man?!?!??! rt6 go to you couch and stick your hands inbetween the cuishions. there should be enough change in there to go buy yourself a reliable glass thremometer!!!!

right now you wont be able to tell if your heaters are faulty because the thremometers your using are garbage! did you even try changing the batteries in your digital? and for that stick on, peel that ugly thing off your tank and throw it away! its probably reading the average temp between the room and the tank.

this heating situation is driving me nuts! this is not a trivial task!

go buy a glass heater!
go buy a glass heater!
go buy a glass heater!
rt6, go buy a GLASS HEATER!

:blown:
im an idiot. i meant to say thremometer....
buy a glass THREMOMETER!!!!!!!!!!!

i think that just being anywhere near this thread is enough to lower your IQ!

Do you have the light up and running yet? seeing you dont have a chiller 8 T5 bulbs at 432W should be keeping the temp somewhat above 75 on top of having a heater.

You know when the light fixture Is finally up and running you all are going to be answering the next big question "how do I get my temperture lower".

Sorry guys another thermometer. Ok yea when i find the time to get out of my house because i can not drive then i will go and get a thermometer. Actually the light was up and running on its time yesterday so it stayed there at 75.8. During the day it was also 75.8 so it really didnt change the temp when the light was on. Over night the temp goes down to about 74.

Stick your hand in the tank. Does the water feel cold? I had a Thermometer that was not telling me the truth. I checked it against another and it was off 5 degrees. It was saying 74.5 and my tank was at 79.5. I knew something wasn't right because I just happen to be doing some work in the tank that day and I had my hand in there and the water did not feel that cold.

Something is not right with your equipment!
