Reeftanks6 90g reef build thread ( pic intense)

I see. I started the hobby when I was fifteen as well (I'm 29 now, yes I know I'm old :P) anyway I just used dechlorinater for the water as well. Without a job it is definitely hard to come up with money for the extras but you should really considering using ro from the grocery store like Melev mentioned or investing in a basic RO unit at least.

The problem is that even if you have very clean water in your area heavy metals still leech out into the tap water that can negatively affect or threaten the lives of any Marine animals. It is the consequence of both the source water and metal pipes that make up the plumbing from water plants and pipes leading to your home. They naturally degrade with time and those metals have to go somewhere--your tap water specifically.

So, in the short term there may not be catastrophic consequences from using tap water. Your 37 gallon is suffering from algae blooms due to, probably, the coral rubble substrate as well as impurities in the water that the cyano bacteria is feeding off of coupled with waste created by your animals. If you want to avoid a similar problem in your new tank you really ought to think about using ro or getting a unit down the road.

Once again, I totally understand the budget constraints of a fifteen year old, I suffered through them when I initially started this hobby as well, but when you do have the money to spend it would be one of the first things you should consider for the future health of your animals and of your tank overall. Good luck!

Thanks for all the replays really helping a lot. bph0013 i only used the water from my house to fill it up but i do use water from the store to top off and other things like that. Yes i will probably get an RO unit down the road i just want to get started first and then get that later.

Keep it up RT6, see how interesting the replys get when we know a little more about you, your circumstances, and exactly what you are doing, thinking, planning with the tank.

Now, get that sand in there (oh, and do your homework!)

lol rumlad i see how it is know thanks for all the replays guys. Just checked the salt only a little higher then the last reading 1.024 so i will check in the morning again and see then ill go from there if i need salt or not

You don't need to check in the morning unless you see white salt sitting on the bottom of the tank. Pour some more in.

If you get the salt level too high, all you have to do is drain some saltwater out and replace it with some RO water.

You type know quite often when I think you mean now. You might want to watch out for that.

If you have any one the bottom, for now you can swirl your hand around and around to get it mixed up. It is possible to have a 1 or 2" layer of hyper saline water at the bottom of the tank.

Do you not have any extra powerheads you can just toss in the tank for now, stashed away in a closet or bucket?

"un-subscribed"! this has got to be some sort of joke right?

i think the moderators made this this whole thread up just to see how we all handle this situation!!! they are probably rolling on the ground reading this!
lights for live sand...
"base rock" that has little pieces that go up for an island look!!?!?!
its a joke!
have we gotten our salinity up yet???

Ok guys update on the tank everything is running great and when i added the salt last night i did put my hand in there and start to swirl the salt around. I have just checked the salt and it is around 1.024 still i will check in when i get home from school and then go from there.

okay RT6, keep it up

Can you tell us, when you say you "added some more" about how much are you adding?
A cup, three cups?
And Melev is right about the powerhead. It will help move things along. Call your uncle and get one of his old spares to borrow until you get your Koralias.

Oh, and as far as the live sand goes, if you put a cup of sand from your old tank into the new one, you will have way more "live" stuff than in that whole bag of wet sand from the LFS.

Dump it in, dump it in, dump it in.....

ok guys thanks for all your replays i will make updates in a hour or so got to do some HW

Keep on top of that English class, okay?

It really does make a difference. You'll thank us later on ;)

Yikes, i feel bad for the guy. He tells us his age and we start ragging him.

Keep up the good work kid! Hopefully my son doesn't pick up these expensive hobbies. We can only afford one reefer per household :)

Who wants to bring me up to speed? I thought the new tank was already setup earlier in the thread...I even replied! Did everything die and you started over or am I trippin? :D

I beleave he is still bringing the salinity up, so you didnt miss anything. :D check back when It hits page 30 or so then the real action will begin. J/K

The tank is set-up, plumbing in place.
There was only fresh water for testing plumbing, flow, etc..
Now he's got some salt in the water, slowly raising the SG to appropriate levels. We are trying to encourage him to keep moving forward in progressive steps, instead of jumping around from topic to topic.

And yes, we are playfully coaxing him into doing his homework and keeping us up to date with meaningful replys to questions and comments.

And yes, mouscacha, your kid could very well pick up this vile habit one day, and his future wife and kids will have you to thank

Yes you heard it from above i just added some salt it was at 1.024 when i checked when i got home. The only reason i have not put the sand in yet is that i would rather have the light when i do this

If you need the lights just to see what you are doing, then that makes sense. But you can add it now, and level it later when the lights come in.

check back when It hits page 30 or so then the real action will begin. J/K
