Diaphragm and peristaltic pumps have always worked very well for me for reactor feed. AB sells one for about $70

Scleractinian, What is AB? I have read some other threads and it seems that this may be the answer. Also I read somewhere, posted by Randy in the chem. forum to use a peristaltic pump.

I've shifted the control of the effluent rate to the output side, by getting a small JG ball valve on the output end (in the sump). I opened up the needle valve on the larger blue tubing to allow free flow into the reactor chamber. While I was at it, I also added an elbow after the valve. The little elbow sits in the cup in the sump. This way I can have the small piece of tubing after the valve pointing upwards, so if there is a CO2 discharge, it'll be vented upwards. The small JG gate valve is easier to adjust than the one on the larger tubing was, and I'm hoping that I won't see any effluent slowdown. I'll keep you posted.
The CA and ALK levels in the tank are fantastic, and I'm really glad we went with reeftek.

I recieved a new plumbing plan from Jorge by email, looks good but I don't have time to play around with it, I'm going to buy a peristaltic pump set to pump exactly what I need, 20-25 ml per minute, and leave the needle valve wide open. I just have no time at the moment, if I did, I would redo the plumbing.

Scott,

What peristaltic pump are you going to use? I may do the same thing.....as I need 20-25ml per minute also and right now my effleunt just about stops if I don't adjust it every vcouple hours.

I think that Custom Aquatic and Marine Depot both sell the pump I posted about above. It's probably the cheapest you'll find new, but the speed is fixed.

yeah thats the problem, i need something that will dose 20-30ml/minute.

Hi all,
I'm not having much, if any problem with slow down, but I also have a much higher rate of effluent (~55 ml/min). I'm curious though (and always anxious to learn) how a peristaltic pump would be hooked up to the reactor. Can someone point me toward a picture or schematic of such a setup?
Thanks,
Tagamet

So that DP-201-110 will dose 29ml/minute huh? Sounds perfect for me.

How does that hook up to the reactor? Can I still use a micro-jet to feed the reactor and just have that pump regulate the flow?

It replaces the pump, or does it run inline with the effluent outflow? Does anyone have the plumbing diagram that Jorge provided so I can take a look at it.

It replaces your feed pump. All you need to do is take a hose from your sump into the pump, the other hose goes to the reactor. It's nice because it uses rollers to push the water through the hose, turns at a slow RPM and is very powerful and precise. You can use just the pump, no needle valve or ball valve at all, it will pump what it is designed to pump period! Do a web search on peristaltic pumps, you will find alot of info how they work.
JG1, yes perfect for me too, if you look at the chart, you can use a different size hose on the same pump to put out 15 ml/min as well, or it looks like using thye same pump with a different RPM will pump even different amounts. I will be ordering a DP-201-110 and an extra 1/8" hose to see what works best for me. At $95.00 it's a steal :( ahh, what's another $125.00 with extra hose and shipping when you've spent thousands on everything else for your tank, LOL

I set up my reeftek calcium reactor yesterday and all is well so far. I have it at the recomended settings for starting out. I just was wondering what normal effluent should be? I think the PH is 7.9. Should the Calcium and Alk be at natural sea levels also? Im new with all this so thanks for your patients. Ill read the rest of this forum later tomorrow but im in a time crunch right now:D . BTW nice thread.

Thanks

I think you need to bump up your CO2 some, so that the effluent ph is closer to 6.7 or 6.8. The ph has to be lower than what you're running to dissolve the media (and get the calcium into the effluent)

Reefrunner262,

It seems like 30 bpm is a good place to start with these reactors, this will change depending on each tanks needs. I usually make changes in the evening and let things stabilize overnight before making another adjustment.
