Well I just received my replacement reeftek reactor. My original was leaking from about 8 places. Jorge decided to build me a new one which came with some changes to the instructions. Jorge said the modifications he made will make the effluent flow much better will set-up reactor friday so I can monitor the reactor while I'll be at home saturday. keeping fingers crossed.

Sounds good. Did you by chance get a ph controller? Just curious, because I'm glad I did. It's a great safety net while getting the unit dialed in (though it rarely does anything except help me sleep better, once it's dialed in). Bob at reeffanatic has been exceptional for aftercare with the ph controller, btw. It's a great unit on it's own, but having someone there for you after the sale is wonderful.

Hi! Tagamet:

I was part of the group buy for the PH controller, I going to buy a ph monitor & a salinity monitor also. I can get rid of the test kits. Does anyone know if a calcium & or alk monitor exist. I checked all the web sites for the sponsers on RC but coun't find any.

Just got my dual reeftek with new design. I am very happy with the quality and ease of installation. The effluent flow valve is now on the output side of the second chamber and a new air bleed valve on the first chamber. My reactor has been running for a few days now without the effluent slowing down. Ok. I'm having trouble with my ReefTek. I cannot seem to get the unit dialed in lately. I've had several email exchanges with Jorge who has been very helpful but I still cannot keep my calcium levels up.

Basically the ph of the effluent is about 6.8. The calcium level of the effluent is enarly 500ppm. Effluent drip rate is about 30 ml/minute.

I've been adding liquid calcium just to get the calcium up past 400ppm in the morning. But when I come home in the evening the calcium is 340 or lower every single day. I've tried increasing the effluent rate to 40, 50 and 60 ml/minute to see if I coudl get more calcium in but nothing is working.

What is your DKH at? Do you have a heavy bio load?. If you increase your effluent rate, you also need to increase your bubble count to keep the effluent at 6.8. A drop from over 400 to 340 is a big drop in a day. I would also question your test kit. It takes quite a bit of liquid calcium to bring you calcium up from 340 to 400 in a day.
 
I do have a heavy bioload. I've tested the calcium levels with RedSea tests and two different Salifert tests. Adding 4 capfuls of Kent Liquid Calcium will bring the calcium up to over 400 but, like I said, the calcium will be lower than 350 every day by the time I return home in the evening.
 
My opinion is that you just need to increase your effluent flow and bubble count alot higher than you are now doing. You will have to get your calcium and alk to the levels needed first and also increase the reactor to maintain them.
 
I have increased both the effluent and bubble count this afternoon. We'll see how the calcium tests out tomorrow afternoon.

Rebels23, I see if I can find a magnesium test locally to test the magnesium.
 
Usually alkalinity in your tank is used up much faster than calcium. I would try using other supplements (Kent Turbo Calcium and Baking Soda) to raise your ca and alk level and then try to maintain it with the ca reactor. What is your tank stocked with? Do you know what your tank consumption a day is in ca and alk without the reactor?

If your effluent is pretty rich in ca and alk, you might want to question the test kits or other factors like your magnesium levels.

I have found that with the effluent at about 6.7 or 6.8 PH, at 55 bubbles a minute, and dripping at 32ml a minute, gives my effluent an alk of 35 - 40 KH.

Oh my god...What a beautiful tank. I looked at your photo gallery and all I can say is outstanding. No wonder you are using so much calcium. Great photo's.
 
hehe, on second thought, I can see why your demands may be that high! :)

Play around with it and let us know waht happens.
 
Well, before I try Jorge's suggestion for keeping the effluent constant, I figured I'd give one more try at something. I went to Home Depot yesterday and bought a valve with two John Guest fittings on each side. I opened the feed needle valve (the blue line from my feed pump) almost all the way, and added the new valve on the end of the effluent line, and adjusted the flow from there. So far, two days straight at 44ml a minute. Let's see if this will work.
 
I increased the bubble count this AM to 60 bubbles per minute. The bubble count was currently about 50-54 bubbles per minute and the ph was right at about 7. So I'm hoping the extra bubbles will allow the ph to drop below the 7 mark.

60 bubbles per minute seems like a lot though doesn't it?
