Reflector questions

Yeah, I used a SE one on my frag tank.

What is your feelings on the quality of color temperatur and PPFD?

Much better than a 10K XM, I saw very little yellow, if any, in it. I was using it by itself, meaning no actinics. I had it on an M58 ballast, which puts it at around 118 PPFD, really good for a 250W bulb. I was actually going to use the DE version on my 60, but in the DE bulbs, the AB has a higher PPFD.

Thanks Allen. Joel, sorry for the hijack.

Do I need actinics for looks or for the Coral? I'll around to reading the articles?? Easier to ask.

Anyone have used high PAR 10K's FS so I can see what they look like? Then I can invest in the ones I like.

IMO, actinics are more for you than anything. Good actinics will give them more "pop" color wise, but have little to do with overall health. Good luck in your quest, finding the right bulb can be a challenge.

You can also get your VHO's with built in reflectors so the 36inch reflector would work fine. Just make sure the bulbs are not over your center brace. I have noticed better coloration with my corals while using actinic supplimentation. As Allen said it also makes the light much more pleasing to the eye.

i like the bluer bulbs, but feel you need at least one 400 watt if you are doing 20K, 400 watt 20K has lass par than a 250 watt 10 K, acording to sanjay...

I too do not like the XM 10K.. too yellow... some peopel say it is white to them, I don't think they live around 20 K's though- or just got lucky w/ ballast combo?????

Hmmmm, sounds like Ushio 10K with 36" VHO's are in my future.

Atticus or anyone, especially Ryan (Rc1214B),

Will VHO's and the MH not fit together in the reflector??

I have style reflector, actinics do mount in the reflector directly. You will need to make sure to brace the bottom of the reflector so the wieght of the light does not distort the original shape.

Thanks Billy,

I think I have decided on the 36" reflector with the 2-250 XM 15K for now. Then I will change to the Ushio's (dang they are expensive though!) and add two 36" VHO's so it fits easily. 48" tubes are a pain to make fit over a 48" tank. Does this sound reasonable to put 36" tubes over a 48" tank and leave the 6" empty on each side?? I am a little concerned about this.

Actually that is what i am running over one of mine right now. 2 36" VHO actinics with 2-250w mh's.

You can also go with 46.5" bulbs, they will fit in the 48" canopy, but you will have to make some holes for them, and possibly cut the reflector down slightly.
