Regal Angel Primer

My pair discovered that LPS are edible - they started to harass my Tubastrea and large Blastomussa wellsi - GRRR :headwally:

Did your regal that died come from aquatic collection?

Yes.
Cyanide being used is a risk with fish from Indonesia or the Philippines. Certain fish have a very high likelihood of being caught that way, especially those that usually hide in the rockwork like marine betta (one good reason to breed them) and also small regal angels.

What a beauty Spartanman, Love to find a Juvi like that. Try some blood worms to get him going Good luck.

Thanks he is pretty cool! I'll try and source some black worms. He has shown interest in food but hasn't taken the plunge yet. I've tried mysis, brine, meat blend, plankton, spectrum pellets, and fresh little neck clams.

So I'm having trouble getting my new Juvi Regal eating. He seems interested but isn't go after anything. I've tried mysis, brine, carnivore blend, plankton, spectrum pellets, Seachem flakes, nori, and fresh little neck clams. I've also tried the above soaked in garlic.

Any suggestions on foods to try? I'm trying to find live black worms locally.

I would try live pods and algae. Live blackworms may work, but will die too fast in saltwater.

What kind of tank do you have him in? Usually live rock is beneficial.

Is he alone or with other fish? I found it helpful to have a few small, non-threatening fish with a new regal.

As for where he is from:
- if he has a rather clear and slightly greenish tail fin, he likely is a blue belly from coral triangle or the West Pacific (likely Indonesia or Philippines)
- a rather yellowish tailfin indicates a yellow belly from the Indian Ocean (usually Maldives or Northwest Sumatra)
- an orange-yellow tailfin indicates a likely Red Sea origin.

He is in my frag tank currently. He will soon be moved to a 100 gallon setup in 2 weeks. He shares the frag tank with a Dwarf Golden. Both seem to get along quite well. The Regal is just slightly bigger than the Golden. The Golden eats really well, and I was hoping that's entice him to eat.

His tailfin is predominantly yellow. I am going to stop by the LFS today and see if they have any garlic guard or something similar to soak some food in. The frag tank doesn't have much LR, but it does have several travertine tiles in there. Not the same I know but still better than nothing.

Last evening I noticed what looks to be some ice spots popping up on him. I elected not to QT him. I am moving everyone into a new setup in 2 weeks. I had planned to run everyone through TTM and a few weeks of PraziPro/observation prior to introduction into the new setup. None of the existing water or rocks will be going into the new setup. So I figured I could tackle a TTM when I switched over to the bigger setup.

None of the other fish have shown any signs of ich. I understand how it works so know it's present and all the other fish have it. I'm assuming their active eating and general health has suppressed the outwardly visual signs. The stress of a new environment is probably what caused it to pop up on the regal. Now my concern is that he is showing signs of ich and isn't eating well. I could run him through TTM now ahead of everyone else, but to make matters worse I leave Monday for a week long business trip.

Do you guys think I'm best off just leaving him and trying to get him eating well and do TTM/QT when I return next Thursday? Or try to get him out now? My belief is that if he's healthy and eating he'll be able to fight off ich, not completely but enough to where it's not causing irreparable damage.

From what I have been reading and researching...

Try FRESH, LIVE, oysters from the shell.

As well as FRESH, LIVE, muscles and squid.

You can also try live black worms.

Also, watch this video on YouTube - the guy is a little long-winded, but it has some good information.

GREAT!

Yeah, for some reason Oysters seem to really work....

Be prepare for your fish to have stringy poop. Fresh oyster seem to cause my angel to have strings for poop, 1-3 inches long.

thinking of adding a red sea regal to my 125 gallon fowlr. i have about 100 lbs of live rock. i currently have a large moorish idol (i have had for 7 months), a 18" snowflake eel, 2" mystery wrasse, pajama cardinal, and 2 false percula clowns. everyone gets along great and i really love the colors of the regal but i do not want to make a impulse buy. any thoughts on adding this fish to my system ? thanks for any input.

The oysters worked for me yesterday and tried a piece of squid to day , which I attached to the oyster shell with I have elastic band and he went for it straight away, again great advice,

As for the guy above asking about frogspawn and hammer coral I have five in total and hasn't touched any, in fact he hasn't touched any corals whatsoever.
