Regal Angel Primer

An update to my regal angelfish. The female is eating very well and just about everything I throw into the tank. The male is still chasing her from time to time though.

This is great inspiration for me. Looks like you and I have similar live stock goals. SPS/LPS corals with lots of big showy fishes.

Can I know more?
What size is your tank? Flow rates? How well do all those Tangs get along?

I have yellow, Kole eye, blue, and Naso Tangs. I am getting a juvenile purple on Sunday for a good deal.

How does your purple do with the yellows and other tangs?

I just love what you are achieving and would like to have almost exactly what you have lol.

I have been planning to get a magnificent foxface also, LMAO. Up until I just saw your system I wasn't really sure it could even be done. You have made my day Sir!

Thank you! The current tank is the Elos 160XL with a dimension of 63"x32"x24" holding about 200gallons. Flow is being provided by 2x MP40QD and a Syncra 3.5 return pump. I ran the MP40s at max power in the shortest long pulse mode. It provides good enough flow but I cannot put anything within 8" directly in front of it. Some of my sps skin peeled off because it was in the direct line of fire of the MP40s.
I'm also upgrading to a bigger tank. And just posted a build thread here.

I don't see any aggression issue with my tangs. However, adding a new fish can be problematic. This is why I use an acclimation box like this one.
https://www.seasideaquatics.com/cat...-sea-side-aquatics-acclimation-box-rf300.html
It allows you to train the fish to feed(if it's not eating already) and it allows the other fish to check it out and get used to the new comer. I've had many success introducing new fish this way including the new female regal angel. I moved the box to different location of the tank each day to let the new fish see different view of its new home.

Don't let what other people say what fish you can add or can't add(to a certain degree). All fish are different and all tanks are different. Add one tang, see how it is. Add another using the acclimation and see how they are. Study your fish and feeding them well. I feed lots of different things. Flakes, pellets, mysis, spirulina brine, LRS reef frenzy, herbivore frenzy, organic nori, live blackworms, live clams, mussels, oysters. I especially like the live food since it can promote healthy bacteria in the fish to fight off parasites and diseases. I don't have the proper set up for quarantining a fish so I don't. I just think that the fish is even more stressed under quarantine. Acclimation box and direct feeding works for me so far.

As for the tangs, the purple one is definitely the most defensive. It doesn't go after anything but if a fish comes too close to its sleeping cave, it will flare up and whack them with its tail. The Sailfin is actually the most tamed. Not sure if it knows that it's the biggest in the tank, but it doesn't even bother to chase anyone down. The powder brown is surprisingly tamed as well. I'm not saying there's absolutely no aggression between all of them but a chase or flare here and there is nothing to worry about. I'm thinking about doing a video to showcase my fish. Will get it posted.

The fish size is in this order ranging from biggest to smallest.
Desjaradini Sailfin
Male Regal
Power brown tang
Purple tang
Female Regal
Foxface
Yellow Tangs(2 are pretty much the same, and I have to look really close to see which one is which)
Lyretail anthias
Leopard wrasse
Clowns
chromis

Ty,
Beautiful tank and angelfish. I really miss my Majestic. It destroyed my aptaisia along with my acans so it had to go. It's a beautiful fish.

Thank you! He's been a good tenant so far but you know how angels are...

Luckily I only really have SPS and a couple of LPS here and there. Zoas and acans are like dessert in this tank.

Nice shot I got of him yesterday.

You need to make sure that he gets enough to eat - he looks pretty skinny.

He only accepts pellets right now so it's made it a bit hard. Luckily he started to accept the larger diameter pellets so hopefully he'll start putting on more weight. Also, the hope is he'll see the other angels eating frozen and nori and hopefully he'll feast like them and get just as fat.

Pellets is great for fattening Regals.
Yeah, he was only accepting the 0.5mm pellets... tiny little things so getting him full was so inefficient.

Now he's readily accepting the 1mm pellets as of 3 days ago so it should go much faster now. It took him almost 3 months to accept the larger pellets.

I think as long as the regal angel is eating something or even pecking on something, you have a very good chance that it will need anything you feed with time.

Makes sense. I was just happy it was eating anything. Even if its brine shrimp and not very nutritious... get something in its belly and then start introducing other foods until you can get it to eat other things.

Have had good success of introducing finicky eaters to other fish and them picking up from the other fish that this mysterious stuff floating in the water is food too! [emoji6]

when you guys are using pellets, which ones do you use and do you personally feed them or use an auto feeder? Also how do you decide on how much to feed? Say, everything they can eat in 1 minute or how do you measure that to make sure you are not over feeding. Also sinking pellets or ones that "Float"

I use Omega One Super Color Pellets. This seems to be the regal favorite types of food.

I also mix it with Omega One Super Color flakes. My male regal do backflips(literally) to get the flake on top of the water.

I also feed them NLS pellets, Formula One, and Formula Two, and this algae pellets food that was supposed to be really good. I throw in a pinch at a time and watch it disappear then throw some more. You will be able to tell when the fish had enough.

These dry food is not their main diet. I feed them dry food every 2-3 days to keep them familiar with the food so that when I'm on vacation, they can survive with an autofeeder.

I feed NLS pellets and also their algae pellets. The regal slurps them right up. I use an Eheim autofeeder to feed him throughout the day.

My regals are very indiscriminate feeders - they try everything I throw into the tank. So far they haven't refused any pellets or flakes.
In general they are the wildest and least picky eaters of all my fish.

I have been feeding with an Eheim feeder, but stopped it for now while battling an algae outbreak due to a busted RO system and possibly too much food.
