Regal Angel Primer

I just posted the following in another thread
Melevs Reef does a good job in this video about acclimation and medicine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3kb5YpvKrk
On angels I do a Prazi Pro Dip for and hour after acclimation, and then a 10 to 20 minute FW dip before going into QT with no medicine. Everyone does things a little different, but most agree on QT
I like using a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tub with a foam filter and water from my existing system, it give the fish plenty of room to swim in. I paid $50 for a used one.

Thanks guys,

I appreciate your responses.

Alton, thanks for the video.

Does anyone know the color differences between the Maldive variety and the Red Sea? I've only seen a Red Sea. Is the color intensity that different?

I also agree that NYAquatics is a great source for regals. My concern is that he only guarantees live arrival. LA has that two week guarantee and if it dies, they will refund your money not just give you a credit.

The money is only one aspect of it, and certainly not the most important. What is the most important aspect is the success of it making it to my display. My one I tried died within 24 hours of it coming out of the bag. It was a beautiful Rea Sea variety. It was poorly shipped. I opened the bag and the foul smell permeated the room. Didn't even feel like I had a proper chance. Anyway......the heart break was the toughest part. I shed tears and I'm a grown man! Don't want that feeling again, but I must persevere and try again. Just doing as much research as possible.

Nope. Ny Aquatic has regals on their expert only list and will only cover them for an arrive alive guarantee. If they had the 14 day I would have gotten one from them already :)

This is correct. It's a big risk. I've seen mixed reviews concerning NYAquatics. I check his inventory about every night.

What makes LA so compelling is the refund of money. There is only one other place I've found that will refund your money and that is Petesfishplace.com.

I recently lost all 4 blood red shrimp I ordered from LA. 2 DOA's and the other two didn't make it past 24 hours. They asked no questions, didn't request proof and gave me my money back. Just can't see how you can go wrong there. You do pay more, but for a regal....who gives a rip!

They have Maldive varieties right now. Considering my options....

Red Sea Regals are more orange while the Indian Ocean (Maldives, Sri Lanka, African Coast to Indian ocean side of Indonesia down to Bali) are more towards yellow.
I had the Maldives ones before and they are nice and easy to get to eat. I had one that started munching on caulerpa only minutes after I got her into the acclimatization tank. I got to see if I can find and scan the picture I have of that one.

If I would order a Red Sea Regal via mail order I would go with NY Aquatics, simply because they guarantee that the regals they ship are eating and send you a picture of what you get for your approval. Since I'm quite picky with my fish I take those 2 things and especially the "see what you get" part over the 14 day guarantee.
What you get from LA (not Diver's Den) comes straight from Quality Marine and no one there is going to take a picture for you to approve.

I ordered a regal form NYA that was advertised as eating. It never ate and was dead in 9 days. He advertised it as being 4-5 inches, it was 6 inches. This is a big deal because smaller regals tend to do better. I have read multiple people say NYA fish come in diseased and do not last long enough to be treated.

My next regal was ordered from LADD and that one is thriving. If it had died they would refund my money. LADD fish are quality fish. LADD is more expensive, but how much is a dead fish worth! No brainer.

When you figure in MYAs overpriced shipping charges, LADD is not that much more expensive.

Well, when it comes to picking a regal angel I would do it rather in person anyway, even if it means to drive down to L.A. for a weekend.

Good thing is that a store here gets them quite regularly, so it's just a waiting game.

Wish this were possible in my case. There is only one LFS that's even worth mentioning where I'm from. It's always the same old boring stuff. I'd have a heart attack if I were to see a Red Sea Regal around here for sale.

Giovanni, I followed you when you got your regal from NYA. I actually remember that fish because I drooled all over my key board. It was a total bummer to see it die. I'm glad to see that you took another crack at one and that it is doing wonderfully. So important to keep trying!

I had plenty of chances to get large red sea regals here - all healthy and eating - but I don't want anything over 4 inch and those are rather rare, even at the online places.

Just a quick update on my DD Regal. He contuse to do well and is putting on some weight. When I feed he gets in there and fights for food with even my most aggressive eaters.

That's a beauty!

Though from the yellow coloration it looks like it came from the Indian Ocean (Maldives, Sri Lanka) and not the Red Sea.

Thanks for the compliment.

Yep it is a Maldives, Though I never said it was a Red Sea fish.

Sounds like you got lucky and the LFS obviously didn't know the difference... Shame on them, good for you but I wouldn't listen to anything they have to say

You guys are really going to hate me..lol. I paid $40 for a small red sea regal.

It's what I paid for my two 3 inch Philippine Regal Angels, though they were almost starved to death when I bought them (now they are both fat pigs).

What is the size of yours? Pictures?

IF it was actually a RS Regal, it was probably a mistake made by the wholesaler, and billed at the wrong price to the LFS
