Regal Angel Primer

In your photos I see a bare bottom tank with no rock work. Might want to put it in an established tank.

That was just the 5 gallon tank I used for the drip acclimatization. By now it is in a established tank with live rock, corals and macro algae.

All are dwarfed by the regal and none showed any aggression to her.

Many time a fish will hide and feel intimidated just by the presence of other aggressive fish. This is why they have the colors they do, to intimidate other fish. I would remove the other fish and see what happens.

You say "none SHOWED", did the regal die already?

It's still alive and ventured out of the caves a little this morning.
As for the other fish: I don't think any of them is intimidating to this regal the least.
I actually found it beneficiary to have some other fish in with a regal angel as it makes them feel safer.

She still shows not the slightest interest in any food I offer. And by now I tried pretty much all: Mysis, spirulina brine shrimp, oyster on the shell, nori, red algae, caulerpa, halimeda,...

This is the tank I have her in for quarantine.

Once in a while she swims listless a round through the tank but then retreats back into the caves. While she is out she shows no sign of fear or intimidation.

I somewhat doubt that this fish was eating while at DD.
I would have never taken a fish home form a store that behaves like this one.

The regal in my avatar took three weeks to eat and now eats like a pig. I am sure it will be fine, very nice QT tank.

Try fresh clams from the grocery store. Open it up and drop 1/2 of on the bottom of the tank for her to pick at. You will probably need to leave the room and eventually they seem to find it.

I also had good success getting mine started with fresh clams .. Took about a week.. Eats like a pig now. Anything and everything. Good luck and hang in there..

That's what I would expect with a freshly imported regal but not with one that supposedly had been properly acclimated for a couple of weeks.

My two 3" Philippine regals were eating from day one, which was good as they were so thin for being at the store for 3 weeks that they had not survived another week without food.

The tank is currently my coral rescue tank and also houses my marine betta pair (though they are still both females) and a pair of percula.

Tried that already with oysters - the clowns and even the marine bettas picked on it but the regal didn't even look at it. The only thing she regularly eyes are the zoas.

Here a question for you regal angel expert. I have a 400 G mixte reef with 6 big tangs that are pretty peaceful, a couple wrasse, one emperor juvenile and some anthias. Do you think it is possible to add two regal to this set up? I know that i should have think about it earlier but i initially didn want any angel and i changed my mind about it.

So many questions need to be answered. Were your tangs in there first? If so, how did they react to the intro. of the angel? If you follow all the steps outlined in this great thread: quarantine, treat, fatten it up, intro to DT in a plastic acclimation box, & if your fish aren't attacking her in the box and the tank has many hide outs or caves, you have a shot at success. Best of luck.

I would say if you get them fat before you put them in you would be fine. The main issue is that most regals are slow deliberate eaters and get out competed for food. After some time in the DT, they do seem to learn to be more aggressive at feed time, to a point.

BTW I had large yellow, Desjardini, and valmingi tangs well establish in my 180 before I put my regal in. I had to over feed until the regal became more aggressive.

My tangs aren t agressive, i put a tiny juv.emperor with them and i had no agression. There plenty of cave i my set up so they can hide when they want. The only thing that worries my is that all my fishes are agressive eaters so i think the regal would have a hard time chasing the food.

i have a 90 G frag tank that i could put it in a few weeks to get him fat.

Another question: Is it a good idea to introduce 2 regals at the same time? What do you do to get a couple or simply to fish that can get along?

Thanks for the answers

Try one regal at a time, the only issue is even if you add a med-large regal the imp will out grow it in a year and become boss. My Imp. doubled in size in 9 months, lucky for him he has not been too aggressive to my regals

It's two weeks now and this stupid fish is still ignoring all food I offer. The only thing it currently picks on are my zoas. Even oyster in the shell placed right next to the zoas is ignored :headwally:
