Regal Angel Primer

Ordered one in from my LFS. Little 2" from Maldives. Looks pretty healthy. Did a formalin dip and put it in QT now. Paid $180. Thought that was a pretty fair price.

I have a 6" male Maldives yellow belly, a 5" Sumatran grey belly, and a 1.5" Sumatran in my 380 gallon. All three get along well.

AC got a super tiny Sumatra Regal in today. It is maybe 30 mm and so far only has its first set of bands.
It is labeled as yellow belly, but at that size it's hard to be sure. Though it has a yellowish clear tailfin so far.
It looked pretty good, but at $150 it was a bit too risky for me... plus I'm flat out of space for Regals.

Tempting. I'd probably grab it if it was a for sure yellow belly. I ended up ordering another Maldives though so I'll already have 2 when that one comes in. The first is eating clams so far on day 2. One that small still has me thinking though. Not sure where I'd put a 3rd one.

Received a juvi Maldive from LA last Sat for 4 days now. He looks very healthy and active but haven't able to got him to eat or at least see him eat. He's picking on rocks and the glass. Every time I feed the tank he runs and hide. I've been feeding pellets, mysis, nori, and some fresh scallops. I'm going to get some Nutramar Ova, heard most fish can't resist. Anyone have experience with Ova?

Try raw clam on the shell

Nice looking one on DD tonight. $249 for a grey chest is way too high though

Looks awesome! May I ask where you got the fish?

Hi, thanks for the interest [emoji4]. I bought it at a store in Lisbon (Portugal) that sources their fish from TMC (Tropical Marine Centre).

I had luck getting mine to eat with spirulina enriched brine shrimp. Got mine from LA as well.

The Maldive I got from LA last week is eating well now. It starts eating when I soak PE mysis with selcon. I just got some Nutramar Ova the other day and it's eating that aggressively.

I never had any trouble with Maldives regals. They should usually eat right away without much trickery needed.
The little one I got from LA earlier this year was eating everything from live Tigger Pods to flake food within the first few days in QT.

I lost the regal sold to me as a Sumatran. She was actually a Phillipine specimen. The store mislabeled her on the day of sale apparently. She was a fish they got in a direct shipment. She ended up being a cyanide fish confirmed by necropsy.

Aren't the sumatrans pretty much a toss up as well?

While cyanide fishing is an issue with Indonesian fish, I don't think it is as wide spread as it once was in the Philippines. And even there is clear improvement on the way.
Of the 4 Sumatra Regals I bought 3 are doing fine. One was likely cyanide caught and wasted away despite eating well. Of the other 3 one turned out to be a Bali bluebelly.
Of the 3 Philippine Regals I bought I only lost the tiny one, likely to flukes or velvet. The 2 larger ones are fine. I still have one of them, the other one went to Minh. The one I kept has by now developed some very nice color. While the blue-gray Pacific Regals are clearly different, they are no less beautiful than the yellow Indian Ocean Regals.
Maldives Regals are of the same genetic strain as the ones from Sumatra, but they are for sure net caught without cyanide.

I have read this thread or most of it all on and off for the last year. I really do appreciate all the contributions everyone has made here, great info.

I finally got my qt up and running and I have tried three RA and all have died from not eating enough getting weak and wake up to a dead angel.

I woke up this Xmas to my last dead RA I had in qt for three weeks and saw it eat VERY little. I had it housed in there with a small convict tang and a Bruenus Wrasse which are both doing great.

I will try one more time but I think the problem is the Definitley the Indo specimens and i will go after a Red Sea.
Who's NY Aqautics with the Red Sea Angels? Any other reliable sources?

Thanks

What size were all the Regals you tried?
Also, where did you buy them an where were they collected?
IME Red Sea Regal Angels can have the same issues as those from other locations. I got one from DD and it never ate in my tank. I've also heard here quite a few negative reports about the Regals from NY Aquatics. Issues ranged from not eating to flukes and velvet.
The best are IMO the ones from the Maldives. Those you can get from LA. There they come with a warranty. Should the fish not eat within the first week and you report that back to them the warranty period will usually be extended. I would say that is your safest option.
You should also stay away from specimen over 4" unless they are eating well at the store.
