Regal Angel

So my LFS just brought in a beautiful orange belly (not sure if it's Red Sea or not). The fish is probably 3.5 to 4 inches long and fat as can be. Basically perfect.

My question is how much should I be willing to spend on it? Is there a negative to purchasing an adult regal? I normally try to purchase young fish.

I'll try to get a picture. I've been looking for a nice one and this is one of the nicest I've seen. Basically a colorful hog.

Thanks

If the regal is eating I'd say pay whatever you feel like paying. If you feel it's too much, then don't go for it. How bad do you want the fish?

FWIW, I bought a 4.5 inch blue belly regal that came in absolutely perfect. Was chowing on NLS. I payed about $130 for it with the sale my LFS was holding.

I picked up one this past Saturday. I thought about a Regal probably for 15 years.

It is a beautiful orange belly as well. I Paid $179.

He was eating in the store, I have hymn a few days and he is finally swimming all around. He is eating PE Mysis. I wouldn't say he eats like a pig but he is doing more than just picking.

If it has an orange belly it is generally a better bet than the blues or greys as far as survival IMO. I have only ever had Red Seas but i have heard far more success stories involving orange bellies. See if the store will take a deposit so it doesnt get sold and wait to see if it eats at the store. As for price $150 is chump change for a possible Red Sea especially one that is eating. Mine just passed the 3 week mark in QT and is getting fatter by the day, QT is a must as they often have flukes and even once established they are delicate.

I lost my first after i didnt QT a firefish, the Regal was the first to go although in the end i lost 5 tangs and other variuos fish. I had that Regal for over a year and a half prior to the incident. I will not make that mistake again now that i have my second Regal! Good luck they are amazing fish.

Thanks for the responses.

Now I'm just concerned that my QT might be on the small side, 10 gallons.

LFS is willing to sell it at $145 which I believe is very fair. It would probably be more for others since I purchase a fair amount from this LFS.

I quarantined my butterflyfish in a 10 gallon, and currently have a moorish idol in my 10 gallon quarantine. Just keep it near the display and change the water on your display tank. Use some of the water removed from the display to change the water in the quarantine. That way you stay on top of water changes for both tanks. I'm been doing this for a while on my quarantine and display and the fish seem to love it, and water condidtions are perfect in both tanks (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and nitrate less than 5).

Thanks for all the answers I got him I'll try to get pictures posted. A little shy but that's expected, trying not to stress more than needed.

Big beautiful fish.

Just my 2 cents here, but if you are going to drop 145 bucks on a fish, (which is more than fair for a True Red Sea Regal, btw) spend some cash and get a bigger QT. You'll be happy you did in the long run.

I hope you get her, just plan accordingly.

Thanks guys. I now have my dream pair of reasonable priced Angels (Gold flake and Regal).

I normally only have one fish in my qt at a time, hence the reason for a smaller qt. I've found I'm more likely to do larger and more frequently water changes with a smaller QT.

Here is a pic as promised.

Just curious is it tough to see the difference been Indian Ocean orange belly and red sea orange?

Thanks for the help. This one was sold as a red sea orange belly.

Red Sea have a richer, deeper, and vibrant color to them...

I guess the way I worded that makes it sound like there are blues. What I was trying to say is the Pacific variety has a less successful survival rate. To me they have a blueish hue to their grey bellies. Sorry for any confusion.

Wow, we did the same thing. I now have a Goldflake and the Regal.

Great minds think alike.

My goldflake is a little spirited dude so I kind wanted a larger a Regal. My research indicated that the goldflake would be the more aggressive of the two. With the regal being the more timid.

So I think it should work out the Goldflake is currently about a inch to inch and a half. The Regal is 4 or 4.5 inches.

Thanks again for the information and advice.

P.S. It seems to be getting acclimated nicely to the QT. Coming out and about.
