Reid's 120g Oceanic Tech Build

I'm glad I got him too. I thought I had taken care of everything, and then he jumped off while I wa working on the rockwork. He can live in the frag tank as long as he behaves himself.

nice rock work

but why did you put the sand in before the rock? aren't you afraid of sand burrowing animals nocking over rock? or sand being blown out from under the rock.

your whole rock structure could collapse!

It has epoxy holding it together. It may sink some, but it shouldn't collapse.

Here is a pic of him right before I caught him. I brought him to the LFS and they took him.

Just watch him on the RBTA, mine really liked snails and shrimp. I don't think he would eat a RBTA but I would keep an eye on him the first day or 2 just to be safe.

They could be brothers!

I am watching him closely every day, and also giving him some food to munch on. Hopefully that will kep him occupied.

I do think that he ate the peppermint shrimp that I put in the stock tank at the end of the curing cycle though... bastard.

Yea, he might have got the PS. As long as he isn't hungry he will probably behave much better, I would think. I never target fed mine because he always hid 90% of the time. He always hid when he was little. But once he got over 2" he got a bit more adventures. And would come out during feedings sometimes.

I really didn't mind until he just got to big. I was afraid he was going to get 1 of my fish. I only have a 65 so my fish aren't really big.

I've really enjoyed the last 30 minutes or so watching your build, I've got a 90gal that I got in trade (along with an assortment of older equipment in decent shape). I've never assembled a tank before so I appreciate the detail and forethought that you've put into your 120...

I'll be watching this and a couple of the other threads with my note pad handy...

Several of these conversations confirmed that I'm at least trying to think like you guys with all the experience..

Feel free to ask me, or anyone else really, anything that you need. Everyone has been great in helping me to work through ideas and things. I am glad that what I have done canbe of some help!

yeah i have been waiting on the update too....:(:(:( i wish i had gone with a 120 tank.... looking great and keep up the good work...

The only up date is this:

Cycle Cycle Cycle.

Actually, the cycle is over, I am just waiting out the last 2 weeks of no fishyness, so that I am pretty sure that any ich that rode into the tank on snails or anything has died off.

Just 2 more weeks!

Working on a Stocking Plan

Working on a Stocking Plan

As we are nearing the time to stock some fish, I have been thinking through a stocking plan. I would appreciate any comments or advice.

1. Blackray / Banded Shrimp Goby (Stonogobiops nemetodes) & Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus) Pair: I already have these guys in my old 29. I will be trnsporting them over here soon. They are very interesting, and I love them.

2. Pair of Ocellaris Clowns (Amohiprion ocellaris): A reef wouldn't be complete without a couple of clowns. I had good luck in the past getting these guys to host in my RBTAs when I have purchased tank-raised.

3. Copperband Butterfly (Chelmon rostratus): While common, I really enjoy these fish, and they are very challenging. I am going to get one that is eating frozen in the LFS, and add him to the tank withthe ocallaris, so that he can become established before I add any greedier feeders.

4. 1 Male McCoskers Flasher Wrasse w/ 1 or 2 Female McCoskers (Paracheilinus mccoskeri): I like these fish, even though they are fairly common. I also understand that they can become good dither fish in the aquarium. Need at least one female so that the male will maintain color, and hopefully flash from time to time.

5. Red Sea Regal Angel (Pygoplites diacanthus): Beautiful and challenging. They also tend toward being one of the reef safer angels. I can't imagine having a largeish reef, and not taking the chance on gettng an angel in there. If at first you don't succeed, sell, and try, try again!

6. Red Sea Purple Tang (Zebrasome xanthurum): Not as uncommon as they once were. I still love these guys.

AND/OR

6. Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternn): Really, I prefer thi to the purple tang, but they have the possibility of getting too big for my tank. I may just have to got one and sell when the time comes.

Others in Consideration:

Sargassum / Red Tail Trigger (Xanthichthys ringens): I love the look of triggers, but there are not many that have the possibility to be safein a reef. The Nigers are nice, but too big, and the blue throat just doesn't do it for me. If only the blueline were a possibility. Love those guys. My wife was heartbroken when I told her that we couldn't get a humu.

Candy Basslet (): Actually, the wife would kill me on this one. Would love one, but it is more likely that I could swing a swissguard (Liopropoma rubre), which are not nearly as awesome.

Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias cheirospilos) pair or trio: What is a reef without anthias? Probably not much of one. I want to get something on the smaller end, and I like the coloration of the lyretail.

Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon meleagris) Pair: I love these guys, but they are probably a long shot. I don't want to get too much in there that will compete for pods, even though I have a big ol fuge, and make sure tho replenish the supply. Would also consider Macropharyngodon geoffroy, Macropharyngodon ornatus or Macropharyngodon bipartitus in this family.

Radiant Wrasse (Halichoeres iridis): Love the look, and I want something in there to hunt flatworms, should some sneak in.

Pygmy Angel: This is a tough one to choose. If I add one, they will probably go in last because of aggression, so I have plenty of time to figure it out. The main species I am interested in are - African Flameback Angelfish (Centropyge acanthops), Cherub Angelfish (Centropyge argi), Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula), Venustus Angelfish (Centropyge venustus), Potter's Angelfish (Centropyge potteri). Joculator? I wish.

Tinker's Butterfly: LOOOOOONG shot.

I'd also like to have some sort of pipefish in my frag tank, I think.

There are more, but they may have to wait.

I don't think a Powder Blue would get too big (I have one in my 120). I've heard that Purple tangs have some major aggression issues, and that over $100 price tag really puts me off of them.

I'm also thinking of trying a cherub angel in my tank as the final addition. Seems to me you like a lot of fish that are borderline on the reef safe issue?

I do like a lot that are borderline. but I am willing to take a chance. I don't get into the Acans or other LPS, really, so that helps. I have a clam, but I am going to keep it in the frag tank.

I hadn't heard that purples are more aggressive than powder blues... or yellows for that matter. Where have you heard that? Anyone else?

I guess I just like a good challenge :)

One of my favorite LFS owners has probably owned one of every variety of tang at some point in time and he said that Purples had always been aggressive to other zebrasomas he had, but fine with the other genus.

Still, purples are gorgeous, and if it wasn't for the price tag i would probably have a purple instead of a scopas.

I think you could do the purple and PBT at the same time, but I'd be worried more about bioload if you plan a lot of other fish. I have a sargassum trigger and it's awesome. I'd recommned one.
