Reid's 120g Oceanic Tech Build

I didn't think I had voided the warranty by not using the tech stand. I guess I need to look into the fine print. I didn't want the tech stand either. I just am not a fan of the look.

Still not sure if I am happy with it. I do like th amount of swimming space / grow-in room for corals... but it just doesn't have much of a 'wow' factor, in my opinion.

Any opinions?

I think it looks great! Especially the rock structure to the right, it has not one, but TWO cool archways to swim under. The tiny 'island' in the middle looks cool to, and I can imagine you're favorite show coral having a nice home there (or cover it in zoanthids!).

As far as grow out room I saw a really impressive picture in March's ToTM here:

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2009-03/totm/index.php

If you look at it he has a pre-corals aquascape shot followed by a grown out shot. Its amazing how much room corals actually take up, but the way he did it it still looks very open and not cluttered at all. With you're setup you should be able to do something similar.

It looks great, Reid. The wow factor comes from the livestock, not the rocks. :)

But if I can wow myself with the rocks, just think of how great it will be with livestock!

I forgot to tell everyone that a crab jumped out of the rocks as I was putting thm in place (does that count as livestock?)

Every rock that I took out of the stock tank I would hold above the tank for a few minutes to let it drain, with the thinking that any dastardly evil doers still in there would abandon ship. And it worked for this guy at least. He is resting comfrtable in the newly started frag tank while I decide his fate.

Forgive my asking if I just don't remember, but what kind of sand are you using aside from the AragAlive sand?

2 x 20lb Aragalive Fiji Pink
2 x 30lb Tropic Eden Aragasnow
1 x 40lb Carib Sea Special Grade
1 x 30lb Aragamax

I used 3 x 20lb Aragalive Fiji Pink and it looks awesome in my 90 although those pumps will blow it around like crazy. i think you have the right idea by mixing it all. I had to reduce the jumpers on my 6105 from 18 V to 12V. I also removed one from the system altogether. i may add it in the future or i will sell it. not sure at this time.

If you can try to get some pics of teh sand and a FTS

I'll try to get some pics up tonight of the sand and full tank. I am thinking I an going ro reduce the jumpers as well. I have not had a ton of sand blowing around, but it definately migrates over time.

How do you like your two return pumps? Does the bottom spray bar return work as you planned?

There isn't quite as much flow to the bottom as I would like, but I am thinking of a couple of ways to restrict flow to the top return. Water, obviously, takes the easiest path. I just want to direct a little bit more to the bottom.

The two returns are going to work out really well, I think. One of the things I have been able to do is take one pump off, use it to mix new salt water, and still keep water flowing throughout the entire system.

Thanks for all of the kind words everyone. I couldn't have gotten to this point without everyones help, so thank you for that as well!

I finally got to play around with the Canon Xsi tonight, and took a couple of ok pics. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm just trying to figure the thing out at this point.

I have the evil crab from my rock, a small RBTA and a Blasto that wasn't looking to great in the old tank. They are my canaries in the mine!

Actually, they're all doing quite well. The Blasto has opened and really brightened up since I brought it over.

The aforementioned crab clinging to the Blasto's rock:

And a mystery snail that I saw wandering around on the rock:

Any thoughts on an ID? I know I didn't put him in there. Tell me quick while I know where to find him!

Boy am I glad you got that crab out. I had the same exact crab for 2 yrs. He wasn't a problem for a long time. But he eventually got about 3" long and he would wipe out all my snails in like 2 days. And he killed 2 of my cleaner shrimp. He was quite a menace. He looked exactly like the 1 you have there.

nice rock work

but why did you put the sand in before the rock? aren't you afraid of sand burrowing animals nocking over rock? or sand being blown out from under the rock.

your whole rock structure could collapse!
