Thanks Sahin, good to see you back on the forums. I had been waiting for an update on your tank thread. I just saw that you started a new thread, which I will be subscribing to!

Hacked up rock and replaced it this weekend. The mystic sunset monti had encrusted a large portion of it, recently killed an acro as a result. Since I have 3 or 4 more high end sps on the same rock that were in the monti's path I had to take action.

Some of these encrusting Monti are pretty lethal...I will be getting some, but will be isolating them on their own rocks.

The monti Turgescens are pretty wimpy if you can find it. I have an orange species and my acros trash it easily.
 
I am looking to automate my water changes. I am thinking about doing something like 10 gallons every other day. I was looking at Genesis Reef Systems, however all of their products are out of stock on their website, so I do not know where they stand. I did send them a message through their website.

I do have an Apex controller, and it would be possible to use it to program the water changes. However it would require designing a whole system with fail safes to prevent accidental flooding and an angry wife.

Anyone have and designs or know of any systems out there for automated changes?
 
I've been doing some testing to see if it matters doing smaller ones over my 10% per week.

My thinking on something your talking about is just using two identical pumps on timers. You can set them up anyway you like. Use two peristaltic pumps or even two of those air lifter pumps.

It'll be easy and accurate...........no need to spend big $ on something like this.

FYI, I did get a message from Genesis Reef Systems. They had to source a new part for the system and expect to have items back in stock early next year.

What really got me thinking was that I change 25% of my water at a time. The Alk level in my tank is generally between 8.4 and 8.8, however RC mixes up to 11 or so. When I do my weekly water change it is more then a minor swing in ALK

I want to further increase stability and I think the automated water changes will to that. It will also help reduce the number one time consuming chore on my tank which my wife will approve of :)

Most peristaltic pumps do not have high enough flow rates for what I want to do, even the 50ml/minute pump from BRS is not fast enough, it is liable to wear out relatively quickly running over 6 hours a day.

I thought about the aqua lifters a bit, but having used one in the past, I am certain that the two would vary in speed over time and cause problems.

The Neptune Systems DOS pump is interesting. It has a much higher flow rate then currently available dosing pumps and its motor design inherently lasts much longer then most peristaltic pumps. Problem is, no release date is given.

The other option I am considering from Genesis Reef Systems is also out of stock until early next year.
 
Liter Meters are nice and very durable if you want to go that route.

I think if I needed to change a higher volume I would just go with something easy and cheap like a couple of maxi jets on digital timers.

If you're set on spending big $ just ignore my cost effective suggestions.

Ed, if your cost effective suggestions could be implemented on my system I would consider them, however I do not think they are feasible on my system without having to shut down my return pump every time a water change occurs. I have a relatively small return section in my sump an therefore only a small window of either having too low of water and running the return pump dry or too high of water and causing my skimmer to overflow.

Perhaps I should have been clearer on that and that would have prevented the need for your condescending implication that I was ignoring your suggestions and would prefer to blindly shell out money.

Yeah, I had a short grumpy fuse at that point in the day. I expect us to have a fully functional fail proof system designed by the time we get back from our trip today. :)
