Replacing filters-Ro/Di

how often do you replace your Ro/Di filters? Mines about a year old now and I made the mistake of not buying a Tds meter, so I'm curious about how often do others around the bay need to replace their filters?

They should last a few years. You should flush the filter at least once a year, pending your water supply

You should replace the DI after 6 months or so. The RO filter is every 12 months. I didn't replace any for one year. My water was 40 plus when I tested. After replace the DI it dropped to 2. I need to replace the RO filter too.. Too lazy to buy and replace :D ... For me 2 is OK..

I just bought a unit. I was told replace the RO every 2-3 years, and the DI every year. The carbon and prefilters every 6 months.

You should definitely get a TDS meter. Once you replace the filters, take a measure of the input water and RO output water and DI output water, this will help to gauge how effective the filtration is at first. Then, test every so often your RO output and DI output. If you are unsure of something, you should check with mfg.

You flush the membrane by running water backwards through it. The nice units will have a valve to do this, the others require you to swap some of the 1/4" tubing around. Read your directions for the propper way to do it to your unit.

Elite, you need to take better care of your RO. The membrane should last many years. I get 5 years on mine. The (3) things that kill the membrane are it this order:
Clorine in the water from not replacing your carbon blocks. It disolves the membrain.
Not using the unit enough. The RO is self cleaning to a point while it is running. Not using your RO is actually bad for it.
The third reason is not flushing it.

I flush mine once a month as all I need to do is switch 2 valves on mine.

I have seen several times from several different ro suppliers that thr flush kit is a gimmick. not necessary at all. just saying what i've seen. i am no expert.

One simple way to tell if your sediment or carbon block filters need replacing is if you see a drop in your psi readings over time. That means your filters have clogged up. If you have mixed bed resin, then I usually know that the DI has been used up when the two types of resin separate before I even test using my TDS meter.

I find that the duration between filter changes depends on your city's water quality and how much you use.

I also heard that flushing is a gimmick. I have never flushed mine and my membrane is 5 years 6 months old now. My water going in is 149 tds and out is 4. I have just RO and no DI. I have many carbon filters prior to the RO so that chlorine should never reach it and thus the membrane lasts longer. I replace carbon once a year but then, I have 11 cabon filters and 2 sediment pre-filters. The TDS coming out was 0 for the first 4 years so maybe it is wearing out now. You can get a TDS meter here: http://www.airwaterice.com/category/tdsmeters/ for $24.95
