Reports from the Frag Swap?

stangreef - you are guessing wrong. we do have annual membership fees, and we also get discounts at LFS, but that it not a right given by becoming a member, but rather a priviledge given by the individual shops. we also have equipment for our members to borrow...like quarantine tanks. hopefully you will join us at our club meetings, and we can share ideas. you can tell us what kinds of things you did at your meetings, and we can show you what we do at ours.

what did Nashville do for their concessions? I am not sure if we even broke even on the food sales.

i'll be moving to jackson soon, and wouldnt mind helping putting one together..

and I am sure we could use your help

malisa nashville had nacho and cheese which I saw alot of people eating. Sloppy joes which they called barbecue, hotdogs and I really dont knoow if they had burgers or not. This was my second year of going to the nashville swap and I still think we ROCKED!!!!!!!!! Me and Whitney attended the speaker show. I really dont think alot of people up stairs knew that it was even going on downstairs. It was way over my head going back to prehistoric times.

Malissa, I spent lots of time in the kitchen trying to warm up my water. They had hot dogs, cheese brats, fries, chips, nachos, sloppy joes, chips, candy, tea, cold drinks, etc. You might post on their forum and see how they handled their concessions. A club member and his family ran it. I know they brought their own fryers, crock pots, frying pans, etc. Also large cans of chili. They diced lots of onions and bell peppers. I got a brat with fries and a coke for $3. Since vendors were rarely able to leave their tables, the daughter of the man running the kitchen, went from table to table taking orders.

I had a great time at the swap and came home with a large cooler full of stuff. I picked up some nice Aussie Acans and some really cool Montis. Dr. Shimek's lecture was great, but reminded me of my evolution class that I had my last semester in college. As has been mentioned, the lecture was attended by only a handful of people. I think a speaker at our frag swap might not be a great idea. There was a great turnout and I think all had fun.

Nick

We exactly broke even on our food sales.

I think the food and the speakers are the kind of things that you may not break even on directly, but they're a draw for people and you make it back in ticket and raffle sales. I think a good speaker, in particular, adds credibility to the event and should bring people in.

It's interesting to me to hear people saying that they thought ours was in the same league because in my mind, Ron Shimek added a huge boost to credibility and the draw. I guess it's the old "important people = important events".

This is why politicians like endorsements.
:D

Why, did Ron have some cool frags for sale?

Well you all have heard him and I've never met him so maybe he's got a reputation for being boring that I don't know about.

Also, since he left RC maybe not so many people know who he is unless they participate over on the other community.

I used to follow his invert forum here on RC and really felt like I learned a lot from him.

For me, it was a draw that he was there and I most certainly would have been in there for his lecture.

And yeah .... maybe he had some cool frags to sell.
