Rescue Corals

Very nice BlueSail and fijisrfr!

Thanks everyone for letting me live through your rescues! I'm now 8.5 months along with my little girl...so hopefully I can get back to rescuing corals soon!

I bought this brain coral from my lfs relatively cheap. It did not have any missing flesh like the last trach I rescued but was bleached solid white. Im also not sure of the species on this one. Anyhow followed mostly the same tlc regimen and two months have elapsed between the pics. First is iphone shot so excuse the quality. Second shot is with gf digital camera with white balance to remove all the blue light. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389597343.694947.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1389597353.439082.jpg

wow started skimming through and your like the coral healer for real. I should post some pics of my chalice that looks p'd off. I can't tell if its current condition is good or not..

question on feeding these-
i don't normaly feed my lps, but in the case of a damaged challice i think it might help it recover if i actually feed it., how often should i feed? i'm worried about possibly feeding too much...
thanks

Recovering corals do much better with feedings. If the coral is bleached (no zooxanthallae to provide nutrition), I usually feed every day for the first week, then I go to 3x per week until the coral has significant coloration again. For other recovering corals, 1-2x per week is usually sufficient. If the coral is sick and is overfed, the food could rot internally and kill the coral. A healthy coral will expel unnecessary food usually.

thanks-
i have a bleached jack o lantern lepto i'm working on. i fed it twice last week, both times it took food (live blackworms). just didn;t want to over do it, it is just a sliver of a frag...

If you notice it expelling food back out or leaving its mouth gaping open with food undigested, I would cut back on the feedings.

I'm pleased to announce... (cue the drum roll)...

I've started the paperwork to create an official non-profit charitable coral rescue foundation! It'll take a while for everything to be set up, but this is a good first step. :)

Hey Mech....did you have that little bambino yet?

Nope! She's still cooking away...29 days left! I hope to have the paperwork done and sent off before she comes.

Does anyone have the suggested formula for the loguls dip? I have a hammer that has some tissue loss and I want to treat it. I've looked but have not been able to find.

I'm not sure what you mean. Lugol's iodine is a mixture of iodine and potassium iodine commonly sold at various concentrations. It's fairly widely available in the hobby under various brand names. If you purchase it marketed under the aquarium hobby, the packaging should have dosing instructions for dipping coral. The stuff I use is one drop per cup of water.

J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution of Iodine 2%, ordered from Amazon. Not sure if this is what I should have ordered now???

Only one way to find out...

Here's the MSDS for the stuff you ordered:
http://www.jcrows.com/msds2.pdf

It says it is 2% iodine, 4% potassium iodine, and 94% distilled water.

I couldn't find Kent Marine's MSDS, but supposedly it has 5% iodine and 10% potassium iodine.

Interesting article on it: http://braziliana.blogspot.com/2007/12/probing-mystery-of-lab-grade-lugols.html

Since I'm not familiar with JCrows Lugol's...I won't make a recommendation for your dosing. Theoretically, doubling the dosage would probably be safe, but I would only try it on corals you don't care about until you hear from someone with more experience with your product. Sorry.
