Return to the Large Tank forum with a 210G Elos

I'm slow but . . .

I'm slow but . . .

David,

I just came across this thread and figured I'd pop in a public apology. I know you have been waiting for an answer from me since May and can only plead severe family and work overload as my excuse, but anyways I just wanted to say I'm back in active RC mode for the next few months as I transition from my 280 acrylic to a ? glass rimless tank, and would be more than happy to send along some new frags. Beautiful tank and home I might add, and I'm really sorry about all the hassle you've had with the lights. I know you're in Maui right now, but when you get back drop me a line again . . . assuming you're not tired of waiting for my reply

Again sorry for the wait, and best of luck with the new setup!

Joe

David purchased some frags from me but emailed me to say he had lost them in the tank transition and was wondering if I would sell him some more. I'm just a hobbiest like you's guys and don't sell that often, but I would gladly do my best to restock David's pieces.

Off thread warning:

By the by Edward, you have the most beautiful tank I have seen second only to Steve Weast's (which I had the pleasure of seeing in person several years ago), and I want you to know that I have contacted AE to see if they can build something like yours for me. What's more I am an avid reader of your blog. It is an inspiration for me to get off my fat a** and work on my stone-age website once again. Thanks for sharing ;)

Joe, thank you very much. My Blog is a way for me to talk to "someone". LOL. I think my wife gets bored of all the things I find and talk about when it comes to my reef hobby. So the Blog is sort of like my diary. ;) I really appreciate your compliments. Let me know if you need anything from AE as I visit them every week since its 5 mins from my work. naka is also a great contact as he knows the AE guys personally.

I just got done looking at your website and love your corals. I especially like how you talk about each coral and in what place it does better (light, flow, etc).

I swore I wouldn't come online while I'm here but this is a semi-work vacation and I saw this post. :) That is so nice of you - and based on how nice you were when I bought the pack, I knew you must be busy. Good luck with the transition!

If I were doing rimless - no way would I trust anyone but AGE or Elos. Contact both - I'm pretty sure there are a couple large Elos in the NY area you could probably see, call Jesse. And those AGE tanks look so nice!

Lowery - I'll definitely post pix. I'm having a hard time deciding which light to wire up. I confirmed with Elos that the B2 will dim these with no add'l parts - just need the bare ballast and the moonlight dimmer I already have will dim the T5's.

Maui is nice. Ka'anapali is nicer than I expected, a little crowded for my taste but the Westin does canned luxury pretty well. Played the Kapalua Bay yesterday and scratched their version of Amen's Corner! :) Next time I think we'll stay at Kapalua. Playing the Plantation Course today. These were taken from my phone.

Maui is a beautiful place to play golf. I found myself spending as much time with my camera as I did with my clubs. Way to go on 4 and 5, those approaches are fairly intimidating!

David,

Awesome place to relax! Hope you'll have time to drive to Hana...beautiful place to drive and see nature and see the falls. Kaanapali beaches...pretty cool place to swim. You could see two islands...And don't forget to check out Haleakala National Park.
Maui is very special place to me...I proposed to my wife there after I took her horse back riding...I saw Tommy Lee Jones, Mike Tyson and Oprah while I was there in 2003. Heli ride is awesome as well...man, I wish I could go back there soon.
Aloha brudah!

if someone in the NYC area wants to see an Elos tank...I should be getting my crystal 160xl in October, just pm me.

Have fun at The Plantation Course 7,411-yards, a lot different then The Bay Course 6,600-yards!!!

You will like the 200 feet climb from 13th through 16th and 17th and 18th are down wind and downhill holes on The Plantation Course. I hope the wind is not too bad for you today.

You guys are right, this place is awesome. I've played golf every day, and its kind of embarrassing on a "reef" website - but I haven't even dove. It was too much of a pain and I know I'll be back soon. Just a lot of golf and a lot of partying.

Plantation was tough! Played Ka'anapali Kai (just ok) and Royal (pretty nice). Today is my last day and we're trying to figure out where to play as I type. :)

On a reef related note - I don't know if I mentioned here but I was having problems with my Vortechs. The motor kept stalling. My wife has been checking and said there hasn't been a stall since I left. I can't wait to get back to finish this thing up!

Mahalo!

Dave you got to take some reef pics!!.

All that time there and only a little snorkeling. Just a lot of golf, and a lot of fun!

Over the next month or so, I have the following coming in ....

- New chiller (Ocean Geotronic 900)
- New skimmer (H&S A200 2x1260)
- New sump (Elos newer size for larger tank)
- New light (I have to pull an Invincible on this. Its a very cool surprise :) )
- New controller stand and add-ons (Just ordered the B2 stand and the "Aqua Rescue" for the B2 which hooks up to a boat battery for backup. Has some other cool features that I don't quite understand yet)
- New controllers for my vortechs (three total, held up by FCC due to the wireless frequency)

Due to my OCD nature, I have way too many colors of way too many varieties of corals. So I have to choose. I really like Naka's mix - and I'll do something similar. Narrow down to 6 or so Acans, a few micros, 6-10 zoo/palys, a few larger LPS - and SPS. Others of course - I like the blue xenia, a few clams, etc - I want a CLEAN, nice selection of corals that are well balanced.

I really hope to have all the stuff within a month, several (all?) are coming from overseas so timing is a challenge and a real PITA. I'll post pix as they come in and I get them.

Spotlights! :p

No and no. :) And just an update on the Sfiligoi - since I got the dual fuse ballasts, I haven't had a single fuse blow. I think I still have six of the ten fuses Alessandro sent me from Italy. Its been a nice fixture with a VERY wide spread. After all that, I really have no idea why I'm replacing it. Its that OCD thing. One thing I found out, with these magnetic ballasts - you can actually switch down to 250W by moving a couple wires. You bypass the step up ballast and viola ... 250W fixture. Kind of a cool option.

Oh and even if someone guesses correctly - I'll probably still say no. I can't jinx myself until its in da howse! But it will have dimmable T5's .... ;)

LOL. I just remembered that late last night (working after midnight) - I posted in the Zeo thread, and you all go there so ......

I got the Grotech Photon, its a 2x400W + 6x54W pendant. The MH ballasts are IC400's - and I'll be running Aquaconnect bulbs. I have a TON of extra T5 bulbs so I'm not sure what combo I'll run. I'm not sure how the T5 ballasts work that come stock - if its a 4x54W + 2x54W, I'll probably dim 4x54W and have two come on later. The pendant is coming with KZ Fiji, KZ Coral Light and Aquascience 22K. I have some ATI Blue+ bulbs and a few Aquablue Specials. I've read in Europe, running a single red spectrum T5 tube is popular - so I'm looking forward to doing that, and still having five more bulbs to play with.

The AC bulb with the IC ballast puts out CRAZY par according to Sanjay's test. I only plan on running the MH for 4-5 hours/day.

I really, really want to try the Elos light - as it works well with the B2. However - I'm really diggin the spread of mogul sockets - and I'm liking 400W bulbs for the 64" length and 32" width - I can keep the pendant 10" above the tank, get great spread and still have good PAR, without putting all that heat directly in there. The six T5's will be great, as I want some lower light areas.

Gotta go make some money now. :)
