Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

Jon it was good seeing you again at the meeting..I think I mentioned that I dose 10ml of vinegar per gallon in my ATO along with kalk which supersaturates it as well as help with the phos and trates. It really helped with keeping PH up and helping the cal and alk levels as well.

Bro, I didn't think I needed one. I trusted my ELOS kit(bad move).. I then had a friend of mine test with his Hanna because the changes in the tank didn't correlate with the readings that I was getting from the Elos and finally got n accurate and very high reading. My Elos wasn't regestering any PO4 at all! I was HOTTT! to put it nicely. I ordered my Hanna the very next day.

Thanks guys!

Ah man, I bet you were hot after finding out about the phosphates. I would have been really PO'd. It's funny though how phosphates can really mess with acropora in a bad way. I've gotten to the point with my new tank that I can tell when it's time to change the GFO by how fast algae grows on the glass. Keep us posted with updates. I always love seeing pictures of your tank.

I think .04 is great! Right not I am up to about 160ml. I'm thinking about switching back to vodka for a while.

Woo hoooo  vodka....party time for the fishies :lmao:
Even though Im dosing Prodibio I'm too chicken to remove GFO. I do run it on a phosban reactor.
My new tank will be Zeovit, though not recommended to run GFO, I think I will still run it atleast in the initial stages coz im planning on using fresh live rock for the scaping, that is if I can get it pest free. :deadhorse1:
Just sharing my paranoia :D

Wow, 160 ml a lot..What is your reason switching back to vodka?

I'm going through vinegar too quickly! LOL! 20ml a day will last a whole lot longer. Besides, I do like to switch up carbon sources every now and again. It will either be full vodka or a 1part vodka, 3 part vinegar mix( of course if I do a mix it will be more than 20ml a day).

It's always great seeing you Mike and learning from your years of experience and true love for this hobby! That's a great idea with the top off. I had considered that for some time now, but have not pulled the trigger. I have to be careful though since I carbon dose. I don't want to over due it it terms of the dosing between what I'm adding directly to the tank and the 10ml/ gallon that I would use in the top off. I have to do my weekly maintenance this evening, so I will do the math and get strarted. I'm excited about trying this. I will keep you posted! One aspect that I like is that I could use vinegar in the tipoff and vodka for the daily dosing. That alone will help to keep to simplify the math knowing how much I evaporate and top off per day! Thanks for suggestion!!!

Nick, ****ed is an understatement!! But... happy to know the truth! The hardest part is watching the decline of some of my prized pieces. The most difficult being allowing nature to take its course without trying to do too much to interfere. The move with adding GFO was a bad one on my part. My tank is not really conditioned for extended GFO use.

LOL. I suppose the fish will readily accept this change ;). If your tank is use to running GFO 24/7 along with Prodibio, I think you will be fine. However, I would caution continuing once you go full Zeo. From what I understand, that system can be a bit tempermental when it comes to auxiliary methods to export nutrients.

Pest free live rock....... Cook baby cook! Best of luck RN.

Hey Brett,

Things are coming along.. The last time I checked my PO4 I was somewhere between .07 & .09. Hopefully it is lower now as I am starting to see some growth. However, I just realized this morning that I have another issue... I notice the CR media looking black-ish, which means that the recirc pump must have died... So, I just got on line to order another eheim. I'm at that point where EVERYTHING is trying my patience with the hobby right now. However, the tank and I will endure :)

Goshh been a while since I checked how my reactor pumps are doin.
Gonna do that....
Thanks for the post was definately a wake up call...:D

When the going gets tough.....well you know the rest.

Keep on trucking Jon. ! Hopefully a round of good luck is coming your way.

Definitley check on it Bro! This is my second one to go over the years.

Thanks for that Darryl. Trust me when I tell you I need all the positive reinforcement I can get right now.. To the untrained eye, even after losing some pieces, most folks would say the tank looks great, but I know the difference and between the PO4 impact and issues of instability due to what's happening with my CR are KILLING me! LOL.... Thanks again Bro!

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU....:strooper:

There...positive reinforcement from me
Now you owe me a reinforcement when I need one for my new build...Dream 2.0 :D

Wow, in how many years? I used to think that Eheim's are one of the most reliable pumps out there. But I guess anything can fail without periodic upkeep.

Awesome tank by the way. Long time observer, first time poster in this thread.

Thank you kind Sir! You will definitely have my support!

....time to switch to dosing pumps and two part.... Hehehe i couldn't resist.

LOL!!! Never!!! :deadhorse:

This will be the third pump since 2003. They are very good pumps, but there is no easy way to detach and clean th recirculating pump on the GEO CR. I am guilty of neglecting them. Thank you so much for your kind comment! Nice to know that you've been following along.

Keep your head up Jon, the tank may win the battle but u will win the war if you are persistent. Trust me I'm losing the battle right now with my tank, but I'm not going to let it win the war. You will get through the rough patch and come out better in the end. Good luck my friend.

Yah doesn't it seem like everything always has to crap out at the same time?
Usually just before you're on the way out of town. :(

You are way to good at this reefing thing to let any of it slow you down too much though.

I'm actually impressed how long and how well you've done for so long without a real P04 tester. The test kits are pretty worthless IME too. The Hanna meters at least give a reading that is actually usable. Just really helps take some of the guess work out of it.

Looking forward to seeing your results.
Reef on!
