Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

J, tanks looking awesome dude. Been following your tank for a while, and it sure looks nice.

One the right hand side, is that a Seriatopora hysterix? Is it the pink variety? And is it the photo or is it brownish in real life? I have the a pink Seriatopora hysterix which was never pink in my old tank but in my new tank it is slowly turning pink.

Looking great Jonathan! The PBT looks good too.

Thanks Andrew... Fingers are still crossed trans-continental shipping is very rough on these guys...

Great looking tank!

Thanks you.. Cheers!

Hey Sahin, thanks for taking a look at the thread and for the great compliment.. Actually it's my poor photo taking... If you look two corals to the left of the big colony, you will see a smaller super pink hysterix colony that has the deepest pink color I have ever seen on a coral.. The larger colony to the left is a Steve Tyree and it also has a pretty pink color, but nowhere near the color of that smaller colony...

You're welcome:) From what I understand, the four corners are the major support points for a tank.

Thanks Rob! Yep. I carbon dose.. Right now, I am dosing around 78ml of Vinegar daily. Looking forward to following your thread! Good luck to you my friend...

jbanks your reef is absolutely amazing and beautiful. I request more pics of equipment. What return pump are you using on the sea swirls?

Thank you :) I use a Reeflo Dart for my returns. Most if not all equipment pics can be found earlier in the thread. Please let me know if there is something in particular that you would like to see.

That last round of pics looks great Jonathan. Hows the PB tang doing for you?

Thanks Brett! So far so good. He's had a couple of spots here and there, but nothing seems to stick and he is without question, the fattest fish in the tank right now. I'm about 3 weeks in with him so, my fingers are still crossed. Right now, he's eating Nori and bloodworms only.

Jon,
Havent had any updates in a while so I thought I would check in on you. Hows everything going? We need more pics, dont make me come to NY and take em myself.

LMAO!!! Thanks Man! Things have been going a bit rough Brett.. AEFWs (need I say More) I have been battling them on a daily basis.. I lost a couple of colonies.. My Chips and my true Oregon tort. To add insult to injury, My asternias have taken a liking to my birdsnests and have been munching back..@%$#! So, I have been heavily basting, removing what I probably cant save and added two Harlequins along with manual removal for the asternias.. Good news.. The Powder Blue is still with me. And some of the other corals continue to grow..I just finished doing some major maintenance on the tank tonight. I will probably post updated pics in the next week or two when things hopefully are stabilized.. No need to scare anyone right now. LOL.

hi, may i ask what you dose in your tank? thanks

Currently, I am doing around 100ml of vodka along with 110ml of magnesium weekly.

AEFW.....say it aint so.!!

hold in there buddy I know you can beat them.

100ml of vodka per day? Seems like a lot.

I'm hanging in there D! It really sucks and difficult as hell to deal with when you don't have the facilities to do so effectively.

The way that I gauge my dosing, is that I closely watch the algae population in my tank. More particularly, valonia. When it starts to pop up, It's usually an indication that the phosphate is creeping up in the tank.. I test to make certain and if it has, I up the vinegar dose by 10ml and wait for the valonia to start melting away.. A few days later, I cut it back 5ml to see if it holds.. Thus, the explanation for the high dosage which has gone up over time.. I've been feeding more frozen food due to my PBT and anthias since they wont touch anything else. Randy Homes-Farley also uses a large volume of Vinegar in his tank ( way more than you would expect).. Not sure if the reasons are the same, but I can tell first hand that Vodka is much more potent. The reason I stopped with the Vodka, is that I've found that cyano loves it.. Not so much with vinegar..

John,
So you are running 100ml of vinegar a day? Wow thats huge. When I started my tank, I used to dose Vodka but at a low level. The results were unreal for the 10 months I did. Then I started to be away alot during weekends and daily dosing of vodka was not really easy. I then switched to Biopellets. I have been on them for almost 14 months, Its not as good as vodka but then again its been 13 months since my last water change. SPS grows like weeds as the system is nice and stable.

Is there a good thread you can recommend for the vinegar dosing? I have yet to read into that. I know some people were doing it but unsure the ramp times and volumes.

Thanks
Rob

Hey Rob. It does seem a lot, but vinegar is 8 times less potent than vodka as a carbon source. Not much literature.. You can follow the same procedure just taking the strength of the vinegar into consideration.

Nice looking tank. Clean look. Unfortunately, that bird won't fly in my part of the country :( All that water just screaming to get out by way of an earthquake. We've had 3+ quakes in a years time. I'm jealous.

Sorry to hear about the AEFW. Hang in their man. My asternia's have been causing problems lately too. Those things are like a little plague.
