Ricordea in the URS

I can't say that I've ever had more than the odd Ricordea here or there in my various tanks, and I don't really recall seeing them in many local tanks, either. However, as I plan to stock my 360g, I'm trying to leave no stone unturned - especially in terms of easier, faster growing corals to fill little voids here and there in the rockwork. In the past, I've used zoanthids for this purpose, but it strikes me that they're the wrong "scale" for a tank this large, so I'm starting to think about Ricordea.

Anyone a fan? Anyone have a good, varied collection? Photos? They seem reasonable to purchase but as with any corals I'd rather get my hands on specimens that have been grown in another hobbyist's tank.

I've got some pink/red Yumas Dwiz but under different lights they get some blue/green
/yellow tones to them. Illl post some bad pics later when I get to my pc.

I've always wanted a ricordea garden, but it's pricey to get a variety. I took this picture at ARC last year and I'd love to recreate it in a little nook of my aquarium. I have a collection of yummas, but they're not very bright. :/

whoa...great pic. That really is beautiful. I have a few in the 120g and 90g. And amazingly...a few in the sand bed in the 55g aggressive.

I've always wanted a patch of them, but couldn't get them to grow under PCs or MH. I've got a small purple one now under T5s that is going crazy... split twice in 6 months. Assuming it keeps going like that, I'd like to add some orange ones to the mix.

My Ricordia

My Ricordia

Definately one of my favorites after I purchased my first one (green) at ABC last November. I've since acquired an orange yuma and a bunch of blue ones from a local guy who tore his tank down. A few of those were the ones I removed from a small rock and fragged one with six mouths. Crazy. My yuma is about the size of a half-dollar and the blue rics are at least the size of a silver dollar.

I've had the blue ones for quite a while and they have just recently started splitting - I've had two in the process in the last couple of weeks. At least for mine, it seems like they get to a certain size before they split. I'll be interested to see if the yuma ever splits. I've had it for several months and it's doubled in size, but no signs of splitting.

That garden at ARC is absolutely amazing!! :eek1: I doubt I'll be able to resist getting a few from them!

Here are my Yuma's this is an older pic and the "garden" has grown in even more. At last count I had about 10 the size of a soda can and 10-15 more in various sizes from pencil eraser to quarter sized. Got them at ABC Pets in Fairport. :)

Yumas seem pretty sensitive. I've lost 5 or 6 in the last 2-3 weeks and more are on the way. Not sure what they are upset about, I suspect they want less light and less flow.

Ricordias on the other hand seem to be doing well!

Sorry to hear you've lost a bunch. :( My yuma would get grumpy once in a while, but seems to have settled into its current spot nicely. I do have another one that came on the rock with the blue rics that is alive, but doesn't look happy. It's been that way for a while, kind of in limbo.

Like you, my rics have been very resilient.

I have a 25lb arch shaped rock full of orange and brown ones, also another 3lb 6 or 8 inch tall rock full of light green and brown ones. I'll sell both of these pieces if you are interested.

Here are some ricordea florida filling nooks and crannies and a bit more:

Thanks for the input so far, everyone. Tom, that's exactly what I'm talking about! The rics are making nice little surprises down lower in your 'scape. Any issues with territory wars between rics and other corals?

Blurry, let us know if you ever pinpoint the cause of your losses.

to the folks hinting at selling me your rics - my tank's not even wet yet, just wanted to put this thread out to satisfy my curiosity in the meantime. :)

Yes, they are not very good neighbors if you let them touch other corals or get stung. They don't reach out and don't seem to release anything to claim territory though. Sometimes they do damage and sometimes they loose big. Mine do best under halide lighting with low nutrient water. I also broadcast feed the fish in the tank and have some cyclopeeze in the mix which may help their growth. They don't like to be moved about much and do poorly if frequently relocated.
