rigleautomotive's Tank Pics Thread

Dan, what salt do you prefer that mixes well to your tank? I've been an IO/RC guy for years but thinking of changing to Red Sea Coral Pro to keep from having to test my water change water so much. I'm bad at testing, one of my flaws.

I like your idea of big weekly water changes. The best tanks I've ever seen have all employed this.

Last testing I did on RSCP left me very unsatisfied.Incredibly high alk and poor consistency(of the big 3,alk,cal and mg) from pail to pail along with the filth it left behind in my mixing barrels made me a hater after several years of dedicated use.I returned back to IO and tweek my cal and mg in every water change mix to embellish my #s in the DT.If the DT cal or mg is low I richen the WC mix with the deficient elements and age for 24 hours while aerating.

I would become more comfortable with water chemistry and testing the big 3 often if a thriving reef is your goal.Understanding the chemistry and enjoying the fine tuning of these parameters is not an option IMO.

Dan,

20-25% water changes.....how often are you doing these?

Weekly but I do miss a week here and there in the summer months when things get too busy.I would estimate I do 45 changes per year to be more precise but I do shoot for every week if I am trying to push growth and color

WOW - looking awesome

I may have to plan a trip up north with a cooler and a bunch of plastic bags :)

I got the cooler boxes and bags in stock,no need to bring lol
Thanks bro,I didnt think anyone was still looking at this thread.

Dan, how often do you test your tank params? -esp alk?

I test Alk often(every day via Hanna checker) when my tank is not beaming like I want it to.When my cal rx is filled and cranking my alk stays at 8.5 to 9 dkh and will not vary significantly until the rx is about half full (at this point I really only ck weekly unless I observe some negative response in any corals)and at this point I bump up the CO2 BPM to keep it stable until I refil.

On the day of my weekly water change I test the big 3 (cal, alk and mg) and adjust my water change water to bump up any # that is light etc...

Getting in tune with your alk,cal and mg consumption is very critical in the long term (especially if keeping acroporas) and I will recommend you test daily for as long as necessary until you can guess what your dkh is and do it accurately, then you can slack off a bit.Of course the type of supps you use and the amount of animals will dictate how diligent you need be

thats it.. im bringing my video cam so we can take some HD Vids of the tank !!!! if im allowed over lol. I keep forgetting to bring it!
