I love coming back and reading through this thread - some truelly amazing examples of braceless reefs - I will not call them 'rimless' -> but that is for another debate, ha ha.

My new system, a ZEOnano6012, has arrived and I'll be posting some photos soon, hopefully setup a build thread but will be documenting everything through my site. Stay tuned.

^ tthats nice!

OK guys - I posted a month or so ago and got some good feedback - thank you. I'm in the final planning stages. Tank dimensions at this point are 47L x 23D x 16H. I plan on having 1.5" between the water level and the top of the tank.

My question - aside from preference - is there any particular reason I should opt for 18"H vs. 16"H?

Thanks!

Me! I just purchased 1/2 Starfire and had the edges Beveled. Slapped it together with some RTV103.
nice....why is there not a build thread available for ur build???!!!...

can you please post up some close up images of your seam work?...

Vangogh121----- that is so nice. Can I ask the price on the glass alone?
Making me wish I would have done the 60" length. I just ordered a 48x30x18 from Miracles.

I payed $625 for all the panels, 3 sides starfire beveled edges. Used Black Silicone. Glass-holes Overflow.

A buddy cleaning up the silicone, Didn't get any build pics, cause it happened so fast.

Amazing......... That's half of what my Miracles cost. How many tanks have you built? Is this your biggest one? Where did you do research?
I just don't trust myself to build one. I won't even build a sump. :)

vangogh121....really nice job
question for you please, since you stated that you used RTV103, can you please tell me how long you had to "work" with the RTV103 before it became too tacky?

approx. how long did it take to build the entire tank???

TIA
C :)

It was a hole lot less than the 20 minutes it said on the tube, We had the panels together in about 5 minutes, The seams seemed (lol) tacky in about 7 or 8 minutes.

I did a ton of research on here and other Forums (which cannot be named ) i also used U-tube.. There is about 20 aquarium building videos.

It is a lot easier than you would think. Luckily the guy who helped me out works with glass and silicone for a living! :)

The only thing I would do different is use tape only to hold it together, We pushed a little to much silicone out by tightening the clamps to tight.

It was a lot of prep work cleaning and tapeing the glass ( 2 + hours) , putting it together only took a couple minutes.

It seems pretty tight (and fully cured) , MSDS give RTV 103 (3 day for cure) 7 days to completely and fully cure. I will do a fresh water test tuesday night. If all goes well, I'll drain on thursday and by the weekend it should be filled.

You won't regret your tank, Your getting it from one of the top three tank builders in the buisness.

BTW The Starfire is worth every penny!

gangero, very close to the dimensions i'm exploring. heck, i'm still changing my mind. wouldnt' be surprised if as i say my latest footprint will be 45L x 22D x 16H contradicts dimensions i've posted previously. that's the beauty of going custom. if you are starting from scratch (no stand) you can build what you want and make the stand work with it. if you are working with an existing stand, you have to think of what you are dealing with. my latest dimension are a realization that the underbracking of my stand need to be taken into consideration or i won't be able to plumb the dang thing. so - all thinking aside, 45L x 22D x 16H is the final measurement.

didnt' answer your question really - i'm babbling. your chosen size will accomadate a lot of different light fixtures, whether mh, t5 or led. the question is - is the depth (18") based on the size of your stand? room? something else? otherwise, i would recommend going with a bit more depth. all personal preference.
