What kind of a aquarium/tank is that? Custom built? Etc...

Yeah I got it at a LFS in S. California called Amazing Aquariums & Reefs.

The dimensions are 36x30x20, the stand was skinned by a friend who does concrete work.

Mixer, Aquarium Obsessed wants over $1100 plus shipping for a 44x24x22 with 12mm glass and no overflow or holes drilled. Yikes!! Looks like I can get away with 1/2" vs 3/4" if I drop the height a couple of inches on a DIY. Maybe that is worth consideration but is 22" enough height if I do a DSB?

John, you should be fine with 22" height. I have 20" and there is plenty of room with my 3"-4" sandbed. I told you the nice tanks are $$$$ ;). I say DIY it :)

DYI it is! Now I need to think about overflows and whether to do a closed loop. Any thoughts on the closed loop?

I would do a glassholes overflow. With the closed loop it is kind of a personal choice, some hate them , some love them. I had 2 setup on my 280 a few years back, but now the vortech's and tunzes are really nice and produce a lot more flow for the wattage.

No this is a guy whom a lfs owner recommended. He says he's been building tanks for 10 years. i went to his house and saw his work on other tanks, light fixtures, and sumps and was totally impressed wiht his work. i ordered the tank right then and there. here's a pic looking down on the rim. the finish is really good and the silicone work is perfect.

Are you going to share the contact info or keep it a secret? Really nice tank.

When you say "glass holes" are you referring to the concept of a very small profile overflow in the tank and the larger one with the pipes on the exterior? Sort of a modified Bean design.

glassholes is a company out of Cali. glass-holes.com they have overflow kits, and return kits. Very very easy DIY project

lol all you had to do was ask. Didn't want to sound too pushy

http://www.reefsavvy.net/ the builder's name is felix. He's awesome to work with.

if you go to page 6 in this thread you'll see the glass hole overflow in operation on my custom build tank. here's a pick of it when dry.

reefsahoy, did they use a solid black glass piece for your back?
no they did not. the builder applied some type of black vinyl backing after the build. there were no air bubbles that i could detect either. i had a oceanic tech 90 gal tank with the same backing and can honestly say the quality of the application of the backing is about the same. heck, the tank build is about the same if not better!

reefs, what is on the back side of the tank?
i'm assuming you're talking behind the overflow. all that's back there is a 1 1/2" black pvc elbow that is attached to a return tube. i added a disconnect so i can easily remove it if i have to. see the pic below.

That is pretty simple and functional. How quiet is it? I read the whole "Bean" thread and he made it sound like you needed three holes and all sorts of safeguards. Have you read that thread?

it's pretty quiet. i hear water trickling down to the overflow box. i believe i can get it more quit because my return pump is running like 400gal/hr so the water is actually dropping into the overflow box. i would install the overflow box again if i were to do it over again. for me the real estate in the tank is sooo improtant!

My rimless that's about 1 week old. corals transfered from my old 90 g. corals lost some color in the move but hopefully they will recover soon.
