Rimless Aquarium Club

Feels solid as a tank! Can't wait to fill it up with a garden hose tonight & test for leaks. Will report back later...

Ha! Gotcha!! Sorry, thread hadn't seen any activity in a while... thought I would stir you guys up. All a joke!!

Looking forward to more of y'alls tank builds.

I am getting ready to start a new tank and I am sooo intriqued by rimless.

What I don't get is how some manufacturers are making rimless 1/2" glass tanks while others are using 3/4" with a rim or bracing.

Either someone is overengineering their tanks or in few years the rimless tanks are going to start falling apart.

I agree, it can be somewhat confusing...
I too am starting a new rimless build (27"W x 24"D x 19"H) and I have taken my inspiration from Elos who uses 3/8" thick glass on their Elos 70 without euro bracing.
For the most part, thickness requirements have many variables and like many DIY aquarium stands, most people seem to (and I'm not criticizing anyone here as its better to be "safe than sorry" ;) ) "over-build" those as well.
I still have yet to find a mass produced aquarium stand that is made completely from 2x4 (or better yet 4x4) construction...

bottom line seems to be that if your going DIY than do your homework and if your able to do an excellent job than go for it....
otherwise, let a professional do it for you and keep the peace of mind that will allow you enjoy your new aquarium without worry :D

I have TWO rimless aquariums. You folks won't like either though. ;)

The first one:

And the 2nd (hard to tell, but I have a hood on it) :

I am going to build a new rimless tank with dimensions either 24x24x16 or 24x24x18.

As for glass thickens, will 3/8 thickness be enough without bracing or is 1/2 the standard for rimless tanks.

Thanks everyone.

3/8" is fine...
as I stated earlier, my upcoming rimless build (27"W x 24"D x 19"H) will be out of 3/8" which is what Elos uses on their Elos 70.
Remember, a good silicone & level build will be what determines a successful build :D

good luck!

I recently finished this. I purchased the glass and built the tank, built the canopy and the cabinet.

What size? I almost bought a GC tank, but then I got the urge to do my own build. Here a couple of more pics. It was a real experience to say the least.

Great build thread. I am still tweaking things, for example the returns are temporary until I get time to change them out. The tank is so new that it still looks bare.

I kept track of every expenditure up to about $3K and then I gave up. Nice looking build btw.
